Act,\u201d officially dubbed the\u00a0Individual Freedom Act. The judge\u2019s move\u00a0means that the law cannot be enforced on college campuses for now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is positively dystopian,\u201d Walker wrote in his <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.flnd.443792\/gov.uscourts.flnd.443792.44.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">order<\/a>. \u201cThe law officially bans\u00a0professors from expressing disfavored viewpoints in university classrooms while\u00a0permitting unfettered expression of the opposite viewpoints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/7\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">law<\/a>, which the Florida legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/florida-critical-race-theory-education-stop-woke-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed<\/a> in March, prohibits public K-12 schools and universities from teaching eight concepts that constitute \u201cdiscrimination\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0lets parents sue if their children are taught those concepts. It also targets employers who require their workers to partake in woke trainings.<\/p>\n<p>The banned concepts include that a person is \u201cinherently\u201d racist or sexist \u201cwhether consciously or unconsciously\u201d due to his race or sex, that a person \u201cbears personal responsibility for and\u00a0must feel guilt\u201d for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race, and that\u00a0virtues like hard work, fairness, objectivity, and racial colorblindness are racist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen,\u2019 and the powers in charge of Florida\u2019s public university system have declared the State has unfettered authority to muzzle its professors in the name of \u2018freedom,\u2019\u201d Walker wrote, quoting George Orwell\u2019s dystopian novel \u201c1984.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge also quoted Orwell\u2019s remark that,\u00a0\u201cif liberty means anything at all it means the right to\u00a0tell people what they do not want to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Act\u00a0enhances enforcement of the Florida education board\u2019s June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/education\/2021\/06\/10\/keep-critical-race-theory-out-of-schools-desantis-tells-state-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision<\/a> to ban public schools from teaching Critical Race Theory and the 1619 Project, which reframes American history with slavery at the center.<\/p>\n<p>In September,\u00a0a professor and student at the University of South Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu\/politics-issues\/2022-09-07\/usf-professor-student-organization-lawsuit-florida-race-based-teaching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed<\/a> a lawsuit against the law. The lawsuit alleged that the law infringes on their First Amendment rights and threatens the professor\u2019s livelihood.<\/p>\n<p>USF history professor Adriana Novoa and student Sam Rechek celebrated the judge\u2019s decision Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a happy day not only for Sam and me, but for the institutions of this country,\u201d Novoa said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/news\/victory-after-fire-lawsuit-court-halts-enforcement-key-provisions-stop-woke-act-limiting-how\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0through the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), which is representing the two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that the courts will defend the existence of a public education that cannot be manipulated by politicians to push any ideology, now and in the future,\u201d the professor said.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Ron DeSantis and Republican lawmakers have touted the law, saying it will prevent both students and employees in Florida from harmful, woke classes and trainings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Florida we are taking a stand against the state-sanctioned racism that is Critical Race Theory,\u201d\u00a0DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2021\/12\/15\/governor-desantis-announces-legislative-proposal-to-stop-w-o-k-e-activism-and-critical-race-theory-in-schools-and-corporations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in December when announcing the bill.\u00a0\u201cWe won\u2019t allow Florida tax dollars to be spent teaching kids to hate our country or to hate each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis added at the time that Florida must protect workers against the \u201chostile work environment that is created when large corporations force their employees to endure CRT-inspired \u2018training\u2019 and indoctrination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019 office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge on Thursday temporarily halted enforcement of a law known as the \u201cStop WOKE Act\u201d at Florida universities.
