Your own mortality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Australian-born actor has two copies of the gene APOE4 which makes him \u201ceight to 10 times more likely\u201d to develop Alzheimer\u2019s in the future. He\u2019s part of an estimated 2-3% of the population carrying a copy of the gene from both parents. Alzheimer\u2019s is a progressive type of dementia that affects memory, thinking, and behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cThor: Love and Thunder\u201d alum also mentioned how his grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s and often \u201cslips in and out of Dutch,\u201d English, and a \u201cmash-up and then maybe some other new words as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the news became both a \u201cself-deprecating sort of joke\u201d and a self-fulfilling prophecy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like my memory\u2019s getting worse,\u201d the actor told Vanity Fair. \u201cIt\u2019s a placebo effect \u2014 or it\u2019s taking place! \u2026 It\u2019s my excuse now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hemsworth said getting the news has changed his perspective and made him think more about how he spends time. He\u2019s been doing \u201coutdoorsy and adventurous\u201d things with his wife Elsa Pataky and their three children. The actor is also trying to stay as healthy as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel thankful that I have in my arsenal the sort of tools to best prepare myself and prevent things happening in that way,\u201d he told the publication. \u201cThe benefit of preventative steps is that it affects the rest of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have predisposition\u2026 it\u2019s all about sleep management, stress management, nutrition, movement fitness,\u201d Hemsworth explained. \u201cIt\u2019s all kind of the same tools that need to be applied in a consistent way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Marvel star also confirmed that he wasn\u2019t sharing the diagnosis to get attention or sympathy, but was rather seeking to spread awareness and encourage fans \u201cto take better care of themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy concern was I just didn\u2019t want to manipulate it and overdramatize it, and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy, or whatever, for entertainment,\u201d Hemsworth said. \u201cIt\u2019s not like I\u2019ve been handed my resignation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Actor Chris Hemsworth is thinking about his own mortality after receiving news that he\u2019s genetically predisposed to eventually developing Alzheimer\u2019s, a condition which also affected his grandfather.
