Hosts like Anderson Cooper will be allowed to keep drinking, but anchors and correspondents like Don Lemon will be prohibited from drinking during the broadcast. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/tv\/news\/cnn-new-years-eve-coverage-sober-anderson-cooper-1235434694\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a> broke the news Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>This year will be the first New Year\u2019s Eve show overseen by Licht since he took over the network in February. During the meeting, Licht reportedly told staffers that drinking on-air eroded the presenters\u2019 credibility and \u201crespectability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CNN flagship anchor Anderson Cooper has hosted the program since 2002. Cooper\u2019s friend, radio and TV host Andy Cohen, joined the show in 2017, replacing comedienne Kathy Griffin. Lemon and other hosts often broadcast from other locations around the country. The program has been known for the antics the hosts get into. Notable instances include: Griffin completely encasing Cooper in <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tv\/kathy-griffin-wraps-anderson-cooper-foil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tin foil<\/a> to celebrate 10 years hosting the show together; Lemon having his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/entertainment\/2017\/01\/01\/new-years-eve-anderson-cooper-kathy-griffin-lemon-ear-piercing.cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ear pierced<\/a> live on air; reporter Randi Kaye following a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/popculture.com\/tv-shows\/news\/cnn-new-years-eve-marijuana-segment-anderson-cooper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pot smokers<\/a> on a \u201cPuff, Pass, and Paint party\u201d while riding on a bus; and CNN reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillWeirCNN\/status\/1344891955562631168?s=20&#038;t=i7YKQv0rep-ubssu-ROtzQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Weir<\/a> getting a tattoo on air.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the broadcast drew significant controversy when Lemon and Cohen both went on alcohol-fueled rants while on air. First, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/im-a-grown-a-man-kiss-my-behind-don-lemon-launches-self-pitying-rant-on-new-years-eve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lemon ranted<\/a> to fellow host Alisyn Camerota and comedian Dulce Sloan about criticism he receives.\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t give a \u2014 what you think about me, what do you think about that?\u201d Lemon said. \u201cI\u2019m a grown-a** man. I don\u2019t care what you think about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am who I am,\u201d Lemon continued. \u201cI\u2019m a grown, successful black man who a lot of people hate because they\u2019re not used to people seeing me \u2014 and people like me \u2014 in the position that I am. To be able to share what I \u2026 my point of view on television, it freaks people out. And you know what? You can kiss my behind. I do not care. I don\u2019t care. I really don\u2019t care. I have one life, and this is who I am, and I feel very, um \u2026 blessed and honored to be in this position to be able to do this. So all the hate I get? It\u2019s motivation to me. Bring it. I don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/tv\/andy-cohen-regret-new-years-eve-rant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cohen<\/a> fired a shot at ABC\u2019s annual New Year\u2019s Eve program, which could be seen from the CNN broadcast. \u201cIf you look behind me, you\u2019ll see Ryan Seacrest\u2019s group of losers performing,\u201d Cohen said. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, but if you\u2019re watching ABC, you\u2019re watching nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision was met with some consternation on Twitter, where users pointed out that the anchors\u2019 drunken antics was the only reason they tuned in to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWatching news anchors get drunk on CNN is literally the highlight of New Year\u2019s Eve,\u201d wrote one Twitter user. \u201cDon\u2019t take that joy away!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCNN to Cut Back on New Year\u2019s Eve viewership,\u201d another user joked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrunk Don Lemon and geeked up Anderson Cooper is some of the best part of the CNN New Year show,\u201d added another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would anybody even bother watching #CNNNYE if not for hosts being drunk on camera?\u201d another user said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only reason I watch CNN on New Year\u2019s Eve is to see all of the news anchors get smashed,\u201d another chimed in. \u201cNothing says NYE to me like Anderson Cooper\u2019s drunk laugh and Don Lemon shaking his a**. @CNN BIG mistake-HUGE.
