He was charged with assaulting a pregnant woman, as well as \u201cassault \u2013 forced induced to have an abortion,\u201d according to court documents, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/nov\/14\/texas-mason-herring-abortion-drug-wife-drink-criminal-charges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mason Herring and his wife have been married for 11 years and have two young children. In February, Herring said he wanted to be separated and moved out of the couples\u2019 house. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11435741\/Texas-attorney-38-indicted-trying-sneak-abortion-inducing-drug-wifes-water.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allegedly<\/a> having an affair. When his wife discovered that she was pregnant, she told him in a couples\u2019 therapy meeting in March and told authorities that he did not respond to the information in a positive way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">He said that \u201cthis would ruin his plans and make him look like a jerk,\u201d the affidavit noted, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/11\/14\/texas-husband-abortion-drug-wife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Herring\u2019s wife said that he gave her water to drink, one of which she saw was clouded with a substance after she drank from it. She went to the hospital after suffering from extreme bleeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cShe stated that she then began to suspect that something had been placed in her drink and that perhaps it was some kind of abortion drug,\u201d the affidavit stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He continued to give her more drinks over the course of the following week after she came back from the hospital. She saw that several of them had \u201can unknown substance\u201d inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">His wife had people over when Herring was set to come to her home in April to possibly show his strange actions. His wife and the two other individuals saw that a drink Herring tried to offer her had \u201can unknown substance\u201d in it. She also found packets of Cyrux in the trash, which is a medication that has misoprostol \u2014 an abortion inducer.<\/p>\n<p>After returning from the hospital, she didn\u2019t drink anything he gave her, but held onto it as proof. At least two of the six water samples she collected later tested positive for misoprostol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Anthony Osso, an assistant district attorney for the case, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/houston-abortion-case-attorney-mason-herring-accused-of-forcing-induction-to-have-an\/12431216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> KTRK that Herring\u2019s alleged behavior was \u201cmanipulative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s premeditated,\u201d Osso said. \u201cWhat we are alleging Mr Herring did, which we believe the evidence supports, is a pretty heinous act. To do that to someone who trusts you, it\u2019s taking advantage of that trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Osso added that Herring\u2019s wife delivered her baby slightly early, but the child is now thriving and healthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Herring is currently free on a $30,000 bond and his lawyer, Dan Cogdell, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/houston-abortion-case-attorney-mason-herring-accused-of-forcing-induction-to-have-an\/12431216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave<\/a> a statement to KTRK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are aware that the Grand Jury has returned these charges,\u201d Cogdell said. \u201cThat said, we very much look forward to our day in court and are thoroughly convinced that we will prevail in a Court of law when our time comes to defend these allegations. Until that day comes, I don\u2019t intend to comment any publicly any further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In Texas, abortion is entirely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclutx.org\/en\/know-your-rights\/abortion-texas#:~:text=Texas%20bans%20abortions%20at%20all,that%20involve%20rape%20or%20incest.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prohibited<\/a> unless the mother\u2019s life is in danger. It is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/07\/18\/texas-abortion-laws-pressure-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal<\/a> to \u201caid and abet\u201d abortion procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Herring is the first person in Harris County to face a charge of assault-force induction to have an abortion, a more recent statue. He could serve two to ten years in jail and faces a fine of up to $10,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/pro-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pro-life advocates<\/a> have expressed the dangers of abortion pills and the possibility that they could be used against women by abusers and human traffickers. This is not the first time that a man has used chemical abortion against a woman.
