Fabulous, yes. Easy, no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After calling Obama a \u201cworld-class worrier,\u201d Newman continues, \u201cit is perhaps no surprise that Obama\u2019s road map for uncertain times resonates in ways that other self-help books do not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to hear from Michelle Obama, who doesn\u2019t always like the way she looks, who felt like an outsider after becoming the ultimate insider; the one who easily becomes lonely; the striver who has spent a lifetime dogged by the question:\u00a0<em>Am I good enough?\u201d <\/em>Newman enthuses. \u201cThe person who sweats. Because this person does not blithely claim to have the answers. She is on a journey. Through her stories, experiences and thoughts, we\u2019re finding the light with her. Lucky us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate to use the word \u2018relatable,\u2019\u201d Newman protests, then declaims, \u201cBut the woman\u00a0<em>is <\/em>relatable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newman then laments of the difficulty Michelle Obama faced in making friends as First Lady:<\/p>\n<p><em>Although we are unlikely to face the problem of trying to acquire new kindred spirits while surrounded by the Secret Service, and most of us don\u2019t have to worry that casual venting over nonsense will end up splashed across social media, the very act of trying to make new friends \u2014 the awkwardness, the profound desire to find people we can trust \u2014 that is very relatable. Who was the last first lady you could say that about?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Newman takes a gratuitous shot at the Trump administration: \u201c(You think it was painful for\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0to see a reckless crew in the White House? Try being the Obamas, knowing as you toss them the keys that so much of what you had worked for was about to be shredded like a cheap dog toy.)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the book, Michelle Obama mocks those who offer thoughts and prayers after tragedies when she writes about her comment at the 2016 Democratic National Convention \u201cWhen they go low, we go high.\u201d Obama writes, \u201cWhat does it really mean to\u00a0<em>go high<\/em>? It seems possible that I might spend years trying to answer this question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it mean when, as a nation, we suffer punches to the gut year after year \u2014 Charleston, Charlottesville, white supremacy, mass shooting, and the knee-jerk \u2018thoughts and prayers\u2019 that followed?\u201d Newman asks.<\/p>\n<p>Newman concludes, \u201cAnd we just had a midterm election where the lows of big lies, fake outrage and charlatanism were (mostly) rejected by the electorate.
