Latino and Asian voters moved significantly more to the GOP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nonetheless, 2022 involved a lot of shocking defeats and disappointments. And 2024 promises to be potentially even more dangerous to Republican hopes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I am worried about the potential for 2024 to become 1964, when Republican Barry Goldwater was annihilated by Lyndon B. Johnson. I lived through 1964<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> and I saw how badly a bitterly split party can devour itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Republican presidential defeat in 1964 was so divisive it pulled down GOP congressional candidates, governors<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> and state legislators. It took years to recover (in the U.S. House<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> we did not fully recover until the 1994 Contract with America campaign).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I remember the disaster vividly<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> because in 1964 I took a year off college to manage a campaign for Congress in North Georgia. I was deeply involved in the campaign process that year<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> and it unfolded in a fascinating but horrifying way. It was a lot like watching a car crash that you couldn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">President Johnson had succeeded President John F<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span> Kennedy after the latter was assassinated on Nov<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span> 22, 1963. It is likely Johnson would have been re<span class=\"s1\">\u2013<\/span>elected because the American people did not want a third president in fewer than two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> in a normal election year \u2013 if faced with a united Republican Party \u2013 Johnson would probably have won a relatively narrow victory<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span> The GOP would not have been particularly shattered. However<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> when the bitterly divisive Republican nomination process was over Republicans were so split that Goldwater only received 38.5 percent of the vote and carried only six states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the Goldwater collapse<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> Republicans lost 36 seats in the House and were down to only 140 members. In the Senate<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> Republicans lost two seats and were down to 32 seats. Republicans would not win a majority in the Senate again until 1980.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Goldwater lost so badly because the personal bitterness between the conservative movement and the traditional Republican Party grew intense and uncontrollable. When Gov<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span> Nelson Rockefeller spoke at the GOP National Convention in San Francisco<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> he was booed. The moderate wing of the GOP openly ridiculed and attacked Goldwater. The tenor of the campaign was captured by Ambassador Bill Middendorf in a book entitled \u201cGlorious Disaster: Barry Goldwater\u2019s Presidential Campaign and the Origins of the Conservative Movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In that \u201cglorious disaster<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span>\u201d the seeds of the future were planted in October 1964, when an actor named Ronald Reagan gave a brilliant<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> nationally televised speech entitled \u201cA Time for Choosing<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span>\u201d (It is still available on YouTube and worth watching<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span>) It raised a remarkable amount of money for that era and launched Reagan on a 16<span class=\"s1\">\u2013<\/span>year quest for the presidency. In that sense<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> Goldwater strategically helped change America while collapsing in the immediate election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Republicans in 2024 are in grave danger of repeating the 1964 disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Republican candidates who focus on tearing down their primary opponents rather than solving America\u2019s problems will further alienate millions of Americans who are tired of the negative, destructive attack approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If Republicans are unlucky enough (and after the failures of the 2022 election there is no reason to believe Republicans will be lucky two years from now)<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> then the Donald Trump faction will refuse to back any nominee other than Trump<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> and the anti-Trump faction will refuse to support Trump if he is the nominee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A 2024 election in which the GOP is deeply divided and angry with itself would be an historic disaster similar to 1964<span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In that situation President Joe Biden \u2013 or whoever the Democrats nominate \u2013 would sweep into office with huge majorities in the House and Senate. America would continue to move toward Big Government Socialism and wokeism<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> and America would grow poorer, weaker, less free<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> and more vulnerable to enemies who want to replace us as the leading power in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">President Trump has it in his power to bring together all the major candidates and agree to limit to campaign attacks. Arguments over policy are fine. Attacks based on personality guarantee bitterness and divisiveness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Candidate Reagan relied on the \u201c11th Commandment\u201d formulated by California GOP Chairman Gaylord Parkinson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Simply stated<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> the commandment said<span class=\"s1\">,<\/span> \u201cThou shalt not speak ill of any Republican.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This rule would cripple the viciousness and destructiveness of the paid consultants who rely heavily on finding weaknesses and trying to cripple or destroy their opponents through negativity (which clearly failed Republicans in 2022).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It would also require discipline and courteous mutual respect among the candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The American people are deeply tired of the bickering and negativity.
