He was asked to substitute for a \u201cBIPOC\u201d interpreter, but then got an email essentially telling him he could no longer do the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He claimed that he got an email from the Theatre Development Fund accessibility programs on April 2 saying that \u201cit\u2019s no longer appropriate to have White interpreters represent Black characters for ASL Broadway shows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Wann and his lawyer, Josh Pepper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/broadways-lion-king-facing-lawsuit-allegedly-firing-sign-language-interpreter-white\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke<\/a> to \u201cFox &#038; Friends\u201d on Monday about the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Wann said he \u201cjust looked at it and said, \u2018What they\u2019re saying here \u2014 I think this is illegal,\u2019\u201d which is when he spoke to the attorney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Pepper explained, \u201cIt\u2019s pretty straightforward. They pretty much admit in their email that they are retracting the offer because he is white.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He explained a \u201cReconstruction Era statute\u201d which states \u201cpeople have the right to contract regardless of their race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He said it \u201cwas intended to protect the former slaves \u2014 to protect black people from not being able to have their businesses.\u201d In 1976, he noted, the Supreme Court decided that white people could also bring lawsuits under the statute in a decision that was penned by Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court Justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe think it\u2019s a strong case that they refused to give him this job because he is white,\u201d Pepper said. \u201cThe statute says you can\u2019t do that, and so we want to recover the money that he would\u2019ve been paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last week, as the New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/12\/lion-king-sign-language-interpreter-keith-wann-says-he-was-fired-for-being-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, Wann filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the Theatre Development Fund, as well as its director of accessibility programs, Lisa Carling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Wann received an email from Carling requesting that he and another interpreter exit the show, noting \u201cthe current social climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWith great embarrassment and apologies, I\u2019m asking you both to please back out of interpreting the show for us on Sunday, April 24,\u201d Carling wrote, according to the Post. \u201cI don\u2019t see any other way out of this. It seems like the best solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Carling made the request because of the director of ASL for \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d who told her to fire all interpreters who weren\u2019t black, per an additional email obtained by the Post and discussed in the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe majority of the characters in the Lion King are black actors and the content takes place in Africa,\u201d Guy wrote to Carling on April 1. \u201cKeith Wann, though an amazing ASL performer, is not a black person and therefore should not be representing Lion King.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWrong is wrong. \u2026 The decision they said in the email was wrong,\u201d Wann said on Fox.\u00a0\u201cIf you insert a different color, if you insert a different race, it is wrong. You are not allowed to fire somebody because of that reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He also said there is \u201csome false narrative out there that I\u2019m trying to push my way into this space that is not my space. There was already a team established.
