Haggis claimed the sexual encounter was consensual.<\/p>\n<p>The screenwriter expressed his dissatisfaction with the jury ruling, vowing to appeal their decision. \u201cI can\u2019t live with lies like this. I will die clearing my name,\u201d Haggis said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/jury-tells-filmmaker-paul-haggis-pay-10m-total-rape-suit-rcna57201\">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The jury had already awarded Breest $7.5 million in compensatory damages for suffering as part of the civil suit, but returned to court to decide if she was also owed punitive damages based on Haggis\u2019 financial situation. The screenwriter claimed to have made $25 million over the course of his career, but insisted that figure didn\u2019t account for funds disbursed for taxes, agents fees, and payments to his two ex-wives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haggis further said the loss of poorly insured homes on top of the amount he\u2019d spent so far on legal fees had left him essentially broke. He noted that his career tanking didn\u2019t help the situation. A former Scientologist, Haggis said that he\u2019d given an estimated $2 million in donations to the church over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The Hollywood director only has \u201ca couple hundred thousand\u201d left to his name, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve spent all the money I have at my disposal. I\u2019ve gutted my pension plan, I\u2019ve lived on loans, in order to pay for this case in a very na\u00efve belief in justice,\u201d he explained during an interview outside court. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not going to be able to pay the judgment you\u2019ve already created,\u201d Haggis\u2019 lawyer Priya Chaudhry agreed. \u201cAnd there\u2019s no way he can pay anything further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing Paul Haggis says can be trusted,\u201d Breest\u2019s attorney Ilann Maazel insisted in response to the director being broke.<\/p>\n<p>Though Haggis never faced criminal charges for the alleged sexual assault, Breest brought the civil suit to court, claiming she suffered professional and psychological harm from their encounter.
