That\u2019s fair \u2014 but Democrats and their enablers are responding with gibberish.<\/p>\n<p>We know why GOP gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin got\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/enr.boenyc.gov\/OF4CY0PY3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30.3%<\/a>\u00a0of the vote in a city where only 10% of voters are Republican. This Gotham showing helped Zeldin garner\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/election-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">47.1%<\/a>\u00a0of the state vote, when the 2018 GOP candidate got just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.ny.gov\/NYSBOE\/elections\/2018\/general\/2018Governor.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">36.2%<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The answer is crime: 28% <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3859&#038;source=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of likely voters<\/a>\u00a0said crime was their most \u201curgent\u201d issue, ahead of any other.<\/p>\n<p>Easy, then: Newly re-elected Democrats should focus on cutting crime.\u00a0Instead, they\u2019re settling on a different \u201csolution\u201d: The problem isn\u2019t crime \u2014 but that the public knows too much about crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlood-and-guts headlines propelled Republicans in New York,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2022\/11\/how-blood-and-guts-headlines-propelled-republicans-in-new-york-00066287?source=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blared<\/a> Politico\u00a0over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the suburbs,\u201d Democratic consultant Mike Morey told the outlet, \u201cthey\u2019re reading the tabloids, and they\u2019re seeing these really high-profile incidents of someone getting pushed in front of a subway, a shooting, a stabbing, and there is somehow a fear that this could happen in their front yard.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0003-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0003-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Many New Yorkers voted Republican over crime concerns.\" class=\"wp-image-24640611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0003-copy.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0003-copy.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0003-copy.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=512 512w\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Over 25% of New Yorkers cited crime as their biggest concern in the city.  <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe coverage of crime hasn\u2019t always been commensurate with how much crime is actually happening,\u201d an official at the left-wing Working Families Party said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoverage of crime has outpaced its rise,\u201d\u00a0Politico\u00a0reporters explain. \u201cNew York news outlets have run 58,131 stories about crime so far this year. . . . There were just 28,638 for the period in 2020.\u201d\u00a0Or as NY1 anchor Errol Louis <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2022\/11\/new-yorkers-rejected-the-doom-and-gloom-about-crime.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> for New York magazine, the election represented \u201cthe resounding electoral defeat of Zeldin\u2019s much-hyped claim that crime is raging out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to this take, the problem is that people in the New York suburbs read the city papers \u2014 particularly <em>this <\/em>paper.<\/p>\n<p>So area voters were tricked into voting GOP in greater numbers, even as national voters mostly stuck with Democrats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the idea that people in the suburbs are being gulled into worrying about urban crime that doesn\u2019t affect them.\u00a0For nearly 30 years up until 2020, people who live east or north of the city could confidently send their teenage kids, their spouses, their elderly parents or themselves on the train into the city, to see a play, go to the doctor, go shopping or go nightclubbing, with decreasing cause to worry.<\/p>\n<p>With felonies up 32.3% relative to 2019, and still surging, and murders still up 26% since then, despite Adams-era declines from last year\u2019s peaks, suburbanites can\u2019t do that anymore.<\/p>\n<p>As for the \u201cblood and guts\u201d stories scaring the suburbanites: Which stories\u00a0<em>shouldn\u2019t\u00a0<\/em>news outlets cover?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0002-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0002-copy.jpg\" alt=\"All major crimes have seen an increase so far in 2022.\" class=\"wp-image-24640613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0002-copy.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0002-copy.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/media-deflection-new-york-crime-0002-copy.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=512 512w\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Subway crime, including murder, has surged in recent months. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/23\/this-subway-cop-surge-is-about-getting-hochul-re-elected-not-a-lasting-fix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four subway murders<\/a>\u00a0in less than three weeks \u2014 something not seen since the early 1990s? The serial rapist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/03\/jogger-43-raped-by-total-stranger-in-nyc-cops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who attacked<\/a>\u00a0a tourist on the Hudson River promenade? The robbery-murder gang targeting gay men partying on Manhattan\u2019s west side,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/11\/roofie-robber-2-killed-in-drugging-attacks-on-gay-men\/\">killing two<\/a>?\u00a0And just this weekend,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/13\/nyc-shooting-leaves-one-person-dead-two-wounded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple shootings<\/a>\u00a0in Chelsea, including one killing?<\/p>\n<p>In a context of double-digit crime increases, reporting on specific crimes that make up the statistics is only, well, reporting the news.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What about the idea that the number of news stories is out of proportion?<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>We only have one war in Ukraine: Has the press only written one news story about the war? Sept. 11 only happened once; would we expect just one short story drily informing people about the attacks? Anything more is sensationalism!<\/p>\n<p>News coverage also proliferates because of\u00a0<em>differences\u00a0<\/em>in that coverage \u2014 and that\u2019s a good thing. People can make up their own minds. If you want to read that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/04\/nyregion\/new-york-subway-safety.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">subway crime<\/a>\u00a0is \u201clow,\u201d notwithstanding the six-fold increase in murders, you can read the\u00a0Times or Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>As for why New Yorkers care more than nationwide voters about crime, even though crime has gone up nationwide \u2014 and when our crime rate is still much lower than the nationwide rate?<\/p>\n<p>How do you think New York\u2019s crime rate\u00a0<em>got\u00a0<\/em>so low in the first place?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New Yorkers demonstrated in their 1993 election of Mayor Rudy Giuliani and their 1994 election of Gov. George Pataki that they were so fed up with decades of urban chaos that they would have near-zero tolerance for violent crime going forward.<\/p>\n<p>This preference isn\u2019t irrational. Crime reverberates more in a dense city and its surrounding suburbs.
