His first run with the promotion saw him emerge as an intriguing welterweight prospect with unmatched knockout power, while his second run occurred as a light heavyweight. It was during Johnson\u2019s second UFC run that he defeated the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/388\/glover-teixeira\">Glover Teixeira<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/39\/ryan-bader\">Ryan Bader<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/164\/alexander-gustafsson\">Alexander Gustafsson<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/42\/phil-davis\">Phil Davis<\/a>, and earned two cracks at the light heavyweight championship.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"hfCvCp\">\n<\/aside>\n<p id=\"tPOphJ\">He announced his retirement after a 2017 title fight loss to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/373\/daniel-cormier\">Daniel Cormier<\/a>, but returned to competition in 2021 and fought once for Bellator, defeating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/5598\/jose-augusto\">Jose Augusto<\/a> by second-round knockout. In October 2021, Johnson was to fight Bellator light heavyweight champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/fighter\/3467\/vadim-nemkov\">Vadim Nemkov<\/a> as part of a grand prix tournament, but was forced to withdraw from that contest due to an undisclosed illness.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bg0DtP\">Johnson\u2019s pro MMA record was 23-6 with 17 wins coming by way of KO\/TKO.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bNMmqH\"><em>Mike Heck contributed to this report.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anthony Johnson, a Bellator fighter and two-time UFC title challenger, has died.
