Peace and coexistence appeared to reign supreme among so-called <em>dilliwalas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t always thus. In \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Delhi-Reborn-Partition-Building-Capital\/dp\/1503632113\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=PPATD5YT276I&#038;keywords=Delhi+Reborn%3A+Partition+and+Nation+Building+in+India%E2%80%99s+Capital&#038;qid=1668108773&#038;sprefix=delhi+reborn+partition+and+nation+building+in+india+s+capital%2Caps%2C69&#038;sr=8-1&#038;ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.006c50ae-5d4c-4777-9bc0-4513d670b6bc\">Delhi Reborn: Partition and Nation Building in India\u2019s Capital<\/a>,\u201d Hebrew University\u2019s Rotem Geva supplies a concise, perceptive history of \u201chow the twin events of partition and independence remade Delhi.\u201d It\u2019s a city that has always straddled the fault line of Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh civilizations that shuddered horrifically as religious violence convulsed its mosques, temples, and bazaars both before and after the cataclysmic events of 1947.<\/p>\n<p>Geva critically reexamines the regnant accounts of the origins of Delhi\u2019s denominational strife, ultimately identifying various confounding factors that hadn\u2019t previously been fully considered. He sets out to trace \u201chow two nation-states \u2014 India and Pakistan \u2014 became increasingly territorialized in the imagination and practice of Delhi\u2019s residents, how violence and displacement were central to this process, and how tensions over belonging and citizenship lingered in the city and the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelhi Reborn\u201d also plumbs the depths of the aftermath of independence, aiming to chronicle \u201cthe post-1947 struggle, between the urge to democratize political life in the new republic and the authoritarian legacy of colonial rule, augmented by the imperative to maintain law and order in the face of the partition crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A key driver of the 1947 violence can be found in the mismatch between communal expectations and hard reality, especially when it came to establishing the Muslim territory that would one day become Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>The Lahore Resolution, enacted by the All India Muslim League in 1940, demanded that:<\/p>\n<p>geographically contiguous units are demarcated into regions which should be so constituted, with such territorial readjustments as may be necessary, that the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in a majority, as in the North-Western and Eastern zones of India, should be grouped to constitute Independent States in which the constituent units shall be autonomous and sovereign.<\/p>\n<p>However, the resolution nowhere used the terms \u201cpartition\u201d or even \u201cPakistan,\u201d nor did it delineate specific territorial boundaries or explicate the nature of autonomous \u201cstates\u201d within a common country.
