Hakeem Jeffries, long considered a frontrunner to replace House Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/05\/california-pols-jockeying-to-replace-nancy-pelosi\/\">Nancy Pelosi,<\/a> may have his moment as minority leader if Democrats lose control of the chamber and Pelosi steps down, insiders told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries, 52, who lives in Prospect Heights and represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens, is the fifth-ranking Democrat in Congress as caucus chair and has made it known he wants to move up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been itching for that role as long as he could itch,\u201d said one Capitol Hill insider, who noted Jeffries has been having ongoing conversations with fellow Dems about running for leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHakeem will profess his close association with Nancy,\u201d the source said. \u201cShe has put him in leadership so there\u2019s a relationship there. I know she doesn\u2019t want to necessarily pick someone. She sort of wants an organic process to play out.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Bronx\/Queens) and her socialist \u201cSquad\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/17\/ny-dems-in-civil-war-sparked-by-hochulmander-overreach\/\">would not go for Jeffries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only has he personally not worked to reach out to progressives over the course of his growth to possible majority leader\/minority leader, his policies haven\u2019t either,\u201d the strategist said.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries is serving his fifth term in Congress, first elected in 2012 after representing Brooklyn in the state Assembly. He\u2019s well trained,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s a born legislator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ken Frydman, CEO of Manhattan strategic consulting firm Source Communications, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/22\/joe-biden-leads-bipartisan-condemnation-of-lee-zeldin-attack\/\">called Jeffries<\/a> \u201ca solid choice to replace Pelosi as leader of the House Democrats.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the congressman would not comment on future plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRep.
