Before Musk acquired the company, the symbol indicated profiles belonging to celebrities, official government agencies, members of the media, and other \u201cauthentic accounts of public interest,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/managing-your-account\/about-twitter-verified-accounts#requirements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">help page<\/a> published by Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s richest man settled upon granting blue checkmarks to any user who enrolls in a $7.99 per month subscription plan, while the company started adding the word \u201cofficial\u201d under accounts of \u201cpublic interest\u201d verified before Musk assumed ownership, an idea that he had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-introduces-new-idea-to-twitter-and-kills-it-hours-later\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">originally nixed<\/a> after a number of high-profile users expressed disagreement with the move.<\/p>\n<p>Some users, however, immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shoe0nhead\/status\/1590599992133099520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began impersonating<\/a> other accounts by changing their username and profile picture to match well-known organizations or individuals while making their handle a slight deviation from those belonging to the actual accounts, meaning that the profiles appeared to be authentic upon first glance. One user mimicked Nintendo of America under the handle \u201cnIntendoofus\u201d and posted a picture of Mario holding up the middle finger, while another user impersonated former President George W. Bush under the handle \u201cGeorgeWBushs\u201d and tweeted that he misses \u201ckilling Iraqis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another user pretending to be LeBron James claimed that the basketball star was requesting a trade away from the Los Angeles Lakers, while an account impersonating former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani made provocative remarks about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter appeared to suspend many of the fake accounts, while Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1590884973535711232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> users that profiles intending to satirize public figures must now include the word \u201cparody\u201d in their username and bio. The multibillionare had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/twitter-permanently-bans-kathy-griffin-after-she-impersonated-elon-musk-she-fd-around-and-found-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prohibited<\/a> users from impersonating others, permanently banning comedian Kathy Griffin for pretending to be Musk himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying \u2018parody\u2019 will be permanently suspended,\u201d Musk cautioned earlier this week. \u201cPreviously, we issued a warning before suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company also added a number of \u201cofficial\u201d labels to high-profile accounts. As noticed by Daily Wire writer Ryan Saavedra, however, a number of right-leaning users and organizations <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RealSaavedra\/status\/1590998826659491841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did not receive<\/a> the designation. While CNN and Starbucks were labeled \u201cofficial,\u201d Fox News and Chick-fil-A were not.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Musk\u2019s frustration with fake accounts, which almost caused him to back out from the acquisition deal, the entrepreneur released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/read-it-elon-musk-explains-why-he-bought-twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> explaining that the $44 billion purchase was motivated by a desire to foster open dialogue and free expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence,\u201d he explained. \u201cThere is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk induced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/leftists-fume-after-musk-takes-over-twitter-its-like-the-gates-of-hell-opened-on-this-site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frustration<\/a> from leftists after he officially took control of the platform.
