For example, men are about <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/cancerstatisticscenter.cancer.org\/?_ga=2.257286798.422468246.1667609684-1173036380.1667609683#!\/cancer-site\/Esophagus\" target=\"_blank\">four times more likely<\/a> to be diagnosed with esophageal cancer than women, and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/esophagus-cancer\/causes-risks-prevention\/risk-factors.html\" target=\"_blank\">as you get older<\/a>, you&#8217;re more at risk, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), which estimates that people under age 55 make up fewer than 15 percent of total cases. The American Cancer Society (ACS) also lists several <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/esophagus-cancer\/causes-risks-prevention\/risk-factors.html\" target=\"_blank\">lifestyle choices<\/a> that could contribute to your risk factor, such as tobacco use, drinking alcohol, or having a diet lacking in fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>Certain other diseases or medical conditions may also predispose you to higher risk, says the ACS. In their overview of dysphagia, they explain that frequent coughing or choking on food &#8220;can lead to chest infections, such as aspiration pneumonia, which require urgent medical treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re tempted to avoid certain foods, or rely on soft foods and liquids as a way to avoid choking incidents, remember that avoidance won&#8217;t address the root issue. According to University of California San Francisco Health, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/covid\/17-cancer-symptoms-you-shouldnt-ignore\" target=\"_blank\">trouble swallowing<\/a> for more than two weeks could also be a sign of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/lung-cancer-symptom-ignore-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">lung cancer<\/a> (which affects nearly a quarter million <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/lung-cancer\/about\/key-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\">new patients<\/a> each year in the U.S.) or <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/stomach-cancer\/about\/key-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\">stomach cancer<\/a> (which accounts for about one and a half percent of all new cancers diagnosed in the U.S. each year).<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s also true that painful swallowing could be indicative of less deadly issues than cancer.
