Kathy Hochul defeated Republican challenger Lee Zeldin in the midterm contest. But underneath the disappointing loss is a gubernatorial comeback story and a spate of down-ballot GOP candidates who made a bigger red splash in the Empire State than many other candidates were able to pull off around the country.<\/p>\n<p>With 94 percent of the vote tallied, Zeldin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2022-election\/results\/new-york\/statewide-offices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trails<\/a> Hochul by a little over 300,000 votes or 5.6 percentage points. And while this might seem like a lot, especially compared to swing states, in the 2018 New York gubernatorial race, Democrat incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/election-results\/2018\/new-york\/governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beat<\/a> Republican candidate Marc Molinaro by a landslide \u2014 more than 1.4 million votes and a whopping 23.4 points.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, Zeldin <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/map-see-how-every-nyc-neighborhood-voted-in-the-governors-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">picked up<\/a> hundreds of thousands of additional votes from deep-blue New York City\u2019s five boroughs, mostly Queens and Brooklyn, compared to Molinaro \u2014 securing about 200,000 more votes in the Big Apple than the 2018 candidate did. Meanwhile, Hochul received more than <em>half a million<\/em> <em>fewer<\/em> votes in NYC than Cuomo did four years ago.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Even with a loss for Zeldin on Tuesday, after picking up over 200K more votes in the Big Apple than the 2018 Republican candidate did, NYC is looking less blue these days: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ldJmJAEtHm\">pic.twitter.com\/ldJmJAEtHm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sophia (@Sophiamc001) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sophiamc001\/status\/1590789178610094089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2022<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>New Yorkers\u2019 red fervor extended further than the governor\u2019s race, though, with voters successfully flipping multiple congressional districts for Republicans. George Santos won<strong> <\/strong>NY-3 against Democrat Robert Zimmerman, a seat currently held by Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi. Republican Anthony D\u2019Esposito\u00a0beat out Democrat Laura Gillen, flipping NY-4 red. And NY-17 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/09\/heres-a-list-of-major-gop-wins-from-last-night-that-legacy-media-wont-tell-you-about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">went for<\/a> Republican Mike Lawler, who beat out five-term incumbent Democrat Rep. Patrick Maloney \u2014 the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to pinpoint exactly what motivated New Yorkers to vote for Republican candidates, especially considering the exodus of conservatives from the state for freer areas such as Florida during New York\u2019s devasting lockdowns under then-Gov. Cuomo. But it\u2019s undeniable that Democrats\u2019 left-wing policies have wreaked havoc on the northeast state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a result of New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/08\/the-soft-on-crime-radicalism-destroying-new-york-could-take-democrats-down-with-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cashless bail<\/a>, for instance, criminals have been freed to commit more acts of violence, including even murder. Within the past month alone, two murders made headlines after the alleged perpetrators were released from jail under this radical bail reform and then proceeded to commit deadly crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Rewind to the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic when, as The Federalist <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/02\/03\/will-new-yorkers-let-andrew-cuomo-get-away-with-killing-grandmas-just-because-hes-a-democrat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, a \u201cNew York state order handed down by Cuomo and his health department ordered nursing homes to accept recovering coronavirus patients despite the risk to other residents,\u201d contributing to the thousands of senseless Covid nursing home deaths that were drastically underreported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then thanks to mask and Covid jab mandates across the state, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/new-york-supreme-court-reinstates-workers-fired-covid-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least 1,400<\/a> New York hospital workers \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-vaccine-mandate-new-york-hospital-workers-2021-09-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">possibly many more<\/a> \u2014 were fired for refusing the shot.
