Dr. Meredithe McNamara, who testified in favor of the controversial protocol, was fact-checked by an international group of more than 100 clinicians and researchers called the Society for Evidence Based Gender Medicine (<a href=\"https:\/\/segm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEGM<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week, child and adolescent physician Dr. McNamara pledged in front of Florida\u2019s Medical Board to provide a \u2018truthful account\u2019 of pediatric gender medicine,\u201d said SEGM in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/segm_ebm\/status\/1590182979086987264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet thread<\/a> on Tuesday. \u201cShe then falsely claimed that a key evidence report the Board relied on was invalid, as it was written by a \u2018dentist.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McNamara, who treats patients aged 11-25 at Yale School of Medicine and is a frequent<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jahonline.org\/article\/S1054-139X(22)00503-1\/fulltext\"> promoter<\/a>\u00a0of so-called \u201cgender-affirming care\u201d for \u201cgender-diverse youth,\u201d attempted to discredit a key <a href=\"https:\/\/ahca.myflorida.com\/letkidsbekids\/docs\/AHCA_GAPMS_June_2022_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evidence report<\/a> during her testimony by insisting the lead author was \u201ca dentist\u201d and therefore unqualified.<\/p>\n<p>What McNamara failed to mention, as SEGM pointed out, is that while lead author <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.ca\/citations?user=u_9uLEoAAAAJ&#038;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romina Brignardello-Petersen<\/a> does hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), she also has a Ph.D. in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research and has published more than 140 peer-reviewed publications on evidence evaluation and clinical practice guideline methods and teaches at a leading center in systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen misrepresenting the authors\u2019 credentials didn\u2019t work to discredit the FL analysis, McNamara changed tactics,\u201d said SEGM. \u201cShe asserted that the reason the analysis was invalid [is] because it was done by a Canadian team who \u2018violated\u2019 the U.S. standards. This, too, is demonstrably false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cviolated standards,\u201d SEGM explained, referred to a misrepresentation of the type of analysis commissioned by Florida. State officials commissioned an \u201coverview of systematic reviews,\u201d which is \u201can evaluation and synthesis of the already existing systematic reviews,\u201d according to SEGM. McNamara, either knowingly or mistakenly, attempted to discredit a different type of evaluation called a \u201csystematic review of evidence,\u201d which SEGM explained is not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purportedly violated \u2018standards\u2019 don\u2019t apply to the type of review FL commissioned because it was not a\u00a0 \u2018systematic review of evidence,&#8217;\u201d said SEGM. \u201cFurther, the author of the analysis is a methodologist with significant \u2018pertinent clinical content area expertise\u2019 which she disclosed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conclusion of Florida\u2019s analysis, finding that the evidence for both benefits and risks is of low quality, echoes the conclusions of every systematic review to date, including <a href=\"https:\/\/segm.org\/segm-summary-sweden-prioritizes-therapy-curbs-hormones-for-gender-dysphoric-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/genderreport.ca\/finland-strict-guidelines-for-treating-gender-dysphoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Finland<\/a>, and, most recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/englands-national-health-service-abandons-gender-affirming-model-of-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">England<\/a>. Health authorities in all three European countries have abandoned the \u201cgender-affirming\u201d model, finding that the costs outweigh the benefits.<\/p>\n<p>McNamara \u200bconceded that the evidence grading was of low quality but insisted that using the term \u201clow quality\u201d was intended to scare \u201cnonexperts.\u201d She then used the example of \u201clow quality evidence\u201d that led to a \u201cstrong\u201d recommendation to eat fruit to combat childhood obesity. SEGM explained that this comparison is deceptive because the treatment regime of eating more fruits and vegetables is not associated with health risks, while \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care is associated with significant health risks, including sterility and osteopenia.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLow quality evidence can also result in a strong \u2018recommendation AGAINST\u2019 when the treatment is associated with severe risks,\u201d said SEGM. \u201cPuberty blockers and cross-sex hormones have a different risk profile than apples and carrots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McNamara made other \u201cquestionable\u201d claims during her testimony, such as that pediatric double mastectomy surgeries were as rare as genital surgeries, assuring the Board that she had never encountered a minor patient who wanted or received a mastectomy.<\/p>\n<p>Left-leaning news outlet Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-insurance-data-reveals-shocking-number-of-minors-obtained-transgender-surgeries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analyzed<\/a> insurance claims in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/usa-transyouth-data\/?scrolltoken=P9HGXzjK8qvkZvGpRKlFxz0dNvrKUKlTsD8XIZ-TvHxVBKM0OM_Y0MbekaXfg0bCsOsIpQ4rKmijQUByYgAqHsBKfFq9kVU-PjIdxDB0i4PTNUWJKh_I_QKY1uoz8kpq__dSLFjtUjnirlN5eHEtj2VjCmn7e5gzapFQQT_enPgIV3vXqYM-SoeLMWsnvEEG0iMa6UMYcYeF7dHMpIzorx8Mlce8QhiWy7xZ8enSqg.eyJraWQiOiIzIn0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> last month, finding that between 2019 to 2021, at least 776 mastectomies and 56 genital surgeries were performed on teens with a gender dysphoria diagnosis ages 13 to 17 in the United States. Reuters said this data is a \u201csignificant undercount\u201d because it only includes procedures covered by health insurance classified under a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/article-abstract\/2797439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journal<\/a> estimated 1,130 reconstructive chest surgeries were performed on adolescents from 2016 to 2019 using ambulatory surgery data. The adolescents\u2019 ages ranged from 12 to 17, with a median age of 16 and 98.6% being female. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMcNamara\u2019s testimony pleased the crowd but did not impress the Medical Board,\u201d said SEGM. \u201cHer inability to articulate how one conducts differential diagnosis or determines medical necessity of surgery (beyond a teen\u2019s wish), revealed the \u2018Wild West\u2019 state of US pediatric gender medicine.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately the Florida boards of medicine found the evidence to support the use of pediatric \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care lacking and voted 6-3 to prohibit minors from accessing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender-related surgeries statewide, \u200b\u200bmaking it<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A key witness who testified on behalf of pediatric \u201cgender-affirming\u201d care in the Florida joint medical board committee made a series of false and misleading claims, according to a global group of medical professionals.
