In Arizona, McConnell axed $18 million from the race where Republican venture capitalist Blake Masters sought to bring down a well-funded Democrat incumbent. While the Masters race remains too close to call, Gen. Don Bolduc in New Hampshire was comfortably defeated by Democrat Sen. Maggie Hassan, who captured a second term despite <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/26\/mcconnell-super-pac-bails-on-new-hampshire-senate-race-after-polls-show-a-dead-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple polls<\/a> showing the Republican within the margins of error. Bolduc was similarly abandoned by the GOP leader with $5.6 million cut from the contest. Both Bolduc and Masters signaled support for another candidate to lead the Senate conference if elected to the upper chamber. <\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/07\/in-final-arizona-push-blake-masters-blasts-the-washington-establishment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In Final Arizona Push, Blake Masters Blasts The Washington Establishment<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McConnell took money from the competitive pick-up contests and redirected resources into Alaska and Colorado, the former featuring a race between two Republicans and the latter featuring a candidate who <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/18\/trump-trashed-colorados-republican-senate-nominee-joe-odea-but-odea-asked-for-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alienated<\/a> the base. Alienating the base, however, has become routine practice for McConnell, who boasts a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/other\/FavorabilityRatingsPoliticalLeaders.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lower favorability<\/a> rating than President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. In other words, McConnell is the most unpopular politician in the country, a fact Democrats used to their advantage in this election cycle by villainizing McConnell as the new GOP \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/meetthepressblog\/democrats-new-boogeyman-abortion-mitch-mcconnell-rcna49506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">boogeyman<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t just former President Donald Trump that Democrats ran against, it was McConnell, and McConnell ran just as hard against Republicans who threatened his perch in leadership.<\/p>\n<p>In Alaska, McConnell\u2019s PAC spent more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/results-lisa-murkowski-kelly-tshibaka-alaska-election-senate-race-candidates-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$6 million<\/a> to boost Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski over the state party\u2019s endorsed challenger Kelly Tshibaka. The spending that could have benefitted tight races to pick up seats in Arizona and New Hampshire instead earned McConnell a formal <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/24\/alaska-gop-censures-mitch-mcconnell-for-meddling-in-race-between-two-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">censure<\/a> by the Alaska Republican Party for the Senate leader\u2019s intraparty interference.
