As the Administration continues to work tirelessly to secure her release, the President has directed the Administration to prevail on her Russian captors to improve her treatment and the conditions she may be forced to endure in a penal colony,\u201d White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/11\/09\/statement-by-white-house-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-on-the-continued-wrongful-detention-of-american-brittney-griner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The press secretary also noted that the Biden administration has previously made offers to negotiate Griner\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we have said before, the U.S. Government made a significant offer to the Russians to resolve the current unacceptable and wrongful detentions of American citizens,\u201d Jean-Pierre said. \u201cIn the subsequent weeks, despite a lack of good faith negotiation by the Russians, the U.S. Government has continued to follow up on that offer and propose alternative potential ways forward with the Russians through all available channels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement also argued that the nation is committed to the release of Griner as well as American citizen Paul Whelan, who is also still held in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. Government is unwavering in its commitment to its work on behalf of Brittney and other Americans detained in Russia \u2013 including fellow wrongful detainee Paul Whelan,\u201d Jean-Pierre concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The latest update follows Griner\u2019s failed appeal hearing in a Moscow regional court last month that upheld her lengthy sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/wnbas-brittney-griners-9-year-prison-sentence-upheld-in-russian-appeal-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that the Phoenix Mercury center and her legal team had hoped for an acquittal or reduction in the sentence that they believed was too severe and politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo judge, hand on heart, will honestly say that Griner\u2019s nine-year sentence is in line with Russian criminal law,\u201d Alexander Boykov, one of Griner\u2019s lawyers, said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/russian-court-starts-hearing-appeal-jailed-us-basketball-star-brittney-griner-2022-10-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a>\u00a0Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cif the court wants to punish her, [it should] give her a new, \u2018fair\u2019 verdict and mitigate the punishment. The severity and cruelty of the sentence applied to Griner shocks people around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Griner\u2019s arrest occurred four days before Russia invaded Ukraine. The 6-foot, 9-inch center was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment in August, just shy of the 10-year maximum sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never meant to hurt anybody, I never meant to put in jeopardy the Russian population, I never meant to break any laws here,\u201d Griner\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/wnba-star-brittney-griner-sentenced-to-9-years-in-russian-prison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0ahead of her verdict. \u201cI made an honest mistake and I hope that in your ruling that it doesn\u2019t end my life here.
