Symptoms include continuous or relapsing mental episodes of psychosis where the individual develops delusion, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking, eventually leading to apathy, social detachment, and decreased emotional expressions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There have been several theories on the causes of the disease, all of which mainly link the mental disorder to genetics, making schizophrenia a hereditary disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, scientists have also found multiple postnatal environmental factors that can give rise to schizophrenia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Urban Environment<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/abs\/10.1086\/632597\"><span>a 1939 study<\/span><\/a><span> by <\/span><span>Robert E. L. Faris and H. Warren Dunham, the authors noted that <\/span><span>\u201cSchizophrenic cases, as<\/span> <span>in all mental disorders, are in the disorganized community at or near the center of the city,<\/span> <span>tending to decline toward the periphery.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2004, psychiatrists Spauwen J et al., looked at 10 different <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0022395604000482?via%3Dihub\"><span>studies in their work<\/span><\/a>:<span> \u201cDoes<\/span> <span>urbanicity shift the population expression of psychosis?\u201d and found that the rates of schizophrenia<\/span> <span>in urban areas are about twice the rate in rural areas.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This shows that being raised in a city during early development in childhood and adolescence<\/span><span> p<\/span><span>roved to be more crucial than moving to a city in adulthood.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Substance Abuse<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>N<\/span><span>umerous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6094954\/\"><span>studies<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span>mention that substance abuse, particularly the use of marijuana plays an<\/span> <span>important role in the development of schizophrenia. The use of marijuana under the age of 21 (when<\/span> <span>the brain is still developing) leads to an even higher risk and excessive use has been associated<\/span> <span>with a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sbxsupplements.com\/blog\/6-Environmental-Risk-Factors-for-Schizophrenia\/\">500 to 600 times<\/a>\u00a0increase in developing schizophrenia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Substance abuse also makes treatment for schizophrenia less effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Vitamin D<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>The sun doesn\u2019t feel sweet without reason. Vitamin D, which is mainly dependent on sun<\/span> <span>exposure, is a secosteroid hormone, recognized as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/bjpsych-advances\/article\/vitamin-d-in-schizophrenia-and-depression-a-clinical-review\/270B5F92CA451A4BF5BF8C8204AA1C72#ref26\"><span>neuroprotective factor <\/span><\/a><span>with a role to play in<\/span><span> b<\/span><span>rain development.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Epidemiological <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/bjpsych-advances\/article\/vitamin-d-in-schizophrenia-and-depression-a-clinical-review\/270B5F92CA451A4BF5BF8C8204AA1C72#ref11\"><span>studies<\/span><\/a><span> have indicated that \u201cthose born in late winter\/early spring, at higher<\/span> <span>latitudes, and in urban settings have an increased risk of schizophrenia, leading to suggestions that this risk may be mediated by vitamin D deficiency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vitamin D insufficiency is found to<\/span><span> b<\/span><span>e highly prevalent in people with schizophrenia and many other psychotic disorders.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unlike many other incurable disorders, schizophrenia can be very well managed and lived with.
