Cameron is hoping for another smash hit, seeing as how \u201cAvatar\u201d remains the highest-grossing movie of all time with an incredible $2.84 billion in revenue. But he\u2019s also realistic about shifting audience expectations so many years later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market could be telling us we\u2019re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: \u2018OK, let\u2019s complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly,\u2019 if it\u2019s just not profitable,\u201d he told Total Film during an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/avatar-3-james-cameron-box-office-way-of-water-interview\/\">interview<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in a different world now than we were when I wrote this stuff, even,\u201d the director continued. \u201cIt\u2019s the one-two punch \u2014 the pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, maybe we\u2019ll remind people what going to the theater is all about. This film definitely does that. The question is: How many people give a s*** now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is evidence that fans still want more \u201cAvatar,\u201d however. The re-release of the original movie earned $30.5 million earlier this fall.<\/p>\n<p>If \u201cWay of Water\u201d does resonate with audiences, Cameron has big plans to expand the franchise, and it sounds like he won\u2019t be waiting another decade to tell the rest of the story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Avatar\u2019 films themselves are kind of all-consuming,\u201d he said during a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/james-cameron-might-not-direct-avatar-4-and-5-himself-exclusive\/\">interview<\/a> with Empire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got some other things I\u2019m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time \u2014 I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s after three or after four \u2014 I\u2019ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I\u2019m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMovie 4 is a corker. It\u2019s a motherf***er,\u201d he continued. \u201cI actually hope I get to make it. But it depends on market forces. Three is in the can so it\u2019s coming out regardless. I really hope that we get to make four and five because it\u2019s one big story, ultimately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cameron also said he doesn\u2019t want to hear any criticism about the length of the latest movie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want anybody whining about length when they sit and binge-watch [television] for eight hours,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/give-me-a-fing-break-director-james-cameron-goes-off-on-avatar-2-critics\">Empire<\/a>. \u201cI can almost write this part of the review. \u2018The agonizingly long three-hour movie\u2026\u2019 It\u2019s like, give me a f***ing break. I\u2019ve watched my kids sit and do five one-hour episodes in a row.
