It said, \u201cAt the 2022 listening sessions, voices speaking against ethic [sic] studies were noticeable,\u201d but that \u201cThe Board remains convinced that ethnic studies, implemented well, will benefit all students.\u201d Prior to the meeting, the board sought to quell a firestorm by issuing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbe.wa.gov\/news\/statement-ethnic-studies-grad-requirement\">statement<\/a> that said that ethnic studies \u201cis not\u2026 the idea that any race is superior to another; about blaming or making students feel guilty about their race or identity; [or] indoctrination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March 2021, as another part of the path to requiring students to study the field, the Washington State Board of Education voted unanimously to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/education-lab\/washington-ethnic-studies-graduation-requirement-gains-support-from-board-of-education\/\">require its own members<\/a> and staff to take eighteen hours of training from the nonprofit Washington Ethnic Studies Now (WAESN). But WAESN and its executive director, Tracy Castro-Gill, have recently been lashing out against Jews who have complained about their treatment in the curriculum and claiming that they have too much power with the school superintendent.<\/p>\n<p>In an October 20 blog post on <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/2022\/10\/20\/jewishness-and-ethnic-studies-3\/\">\u201cJewishness and Ethnic Studies,\u201d<\/a> Castro-Gill mulled \u201cJewish complicity with whiteness\u201d and downplayed the oppression faced by Jews, saying, \u201cRacially motivated hate crimes increased in 2020 while religious hate crimes decreased.\u201d The blog post was one of several on the topic, with an <a href=\"https:\/\/waethnicstudies.com\/2022\/05\/01\/jewishness-and-ethnic-studies-2\/\">earlier installment<\/a> saying, \u201cWhy do some white Jews, in particular, insist that their experiences with oppression and genocide are somehow unique? There are far more examples of genocide among people of the global majority than white Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another entry in WAESN\u2019s series on \u201cJewishness and Ethnic Studies,\u201d Castro-Gill wrote, \u201cWhite Jewish people insisting on being included in a curriculum that has never been about them reeks of white privilege.\u201d She noted that the Washington state development is reminiscent of what happened in California, in which Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/californias-new-ethnic-studies-curriculum-ignores-or-maligns-jews-trashes-capitalism\">radical plan<\/a> following an outcry by Jewish groups, ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/newsom-signs-bill-requiring-ca-public-high-school-students-pass-ethnic-studies-course-to-graduate\">signing<\/a> a slightly watered-down version.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of California\u2019s Jewish legislative caucus penned a letter denouncing the work of ethnic studies scholars of color saying, \u2018We cannot support a curriculum that erases the American Jewish experience, fails to discuss antisemitism, reinforces negative stereotypes about Jews, singles out Israel for criticism, and would institutionalize the teaching of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/radical-activist-teacher-got-away-with-shocking-behavior-for-years\">antisemitic<\/a> stereotypes in our public schools,\u2019\u201d Castro-Gill write. \u201cThe thing is, ethnic studies, historically, has never been about Jewish Studies. The focus has always been on racially minoritized groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Castro-Gill has played an instrumental role in making Seattle and Washington state schools some of the most politicized in the country. Earlier this year, the book \u201cRace To The Bottom\u201d highlighted how the \u201cXicanx\u201d education activist was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/meet-the-seattle-schools-woke-indoctrination-czar-who-married-a-child-molester\">three-quarters white and moved her child in with a child molester<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Castro-Gill worked for the Seattle Public Schools as its Ethnic Studies Manager until May 2020, when the superintendent said she was removing her from her job because of \u201cunprofessional behavior.\u201d But Castro-Gill fell upwards, gaining an influential role over statewide education instead.<\/p>\n<p>By 2022, the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) counted WAESN\u2019s trainings as eligible for professional development credit, meaning Castro-Gill\u2019s group was paid to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-school-teachers-earn-professional-credits-by-learning-critical-race-theory\">training to teachers<\/a>.
