Version: 4.0.47--><p>If you\u2019re like most people, you think of probiotics\u2014\u201cgood\u201d live bacteria that keep your gut healthy\u2014as something that might be added to your yogurt or taken with antibiotics to protect your intestinal microbiome from being compromised.<\/p>\n<p>This view of probiotics often extends to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/probiotics-and-prebiotics#whats-the-difference\">prebiotics<\/a>\u201c\u2014fiber-rich foods that the good bacteria in your gut \u201ceat\u201d\u2014and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32717965\/\">postbiotics<\/a>\u201d\u2014substances released by the probiotics.<\/p>\n<p>But as researchers study the relatively new science of gut microbiota, they\u2019re finding that probiotics have many complex and valuable actions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-probiotics\">Probiotics<\/a> biotransform nutrients and<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33305713\/\"> fight<\/a> toxins and pathogens in the body, they affect<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6389720\/\"> mood<\/a> and body<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41367-019-0011-7#:~:text=The%20gut%20microbiota%20is%20known,accumulation%20and%20the%20resultant%20obesity.\"> weight<\/a>, and\u00a0appear to sometimes prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-cancer\">cancer<\/a> and tumor progression, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33305713\/\"> scientific<\/a> research.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-cancer effects have now been studied with colon, oral, breast, cervical, and pancreatic cancers.<\/p>\n<h2>How Do Probiotics Work?<\/h2>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0753332220306028\">2020 study<\/a> in\u00a0Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy, key probiotic mechanisms of action include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>binding, degradation, and inhibition of mutagen [an agent that changes genetic material]<\/li>\n<li>procarcinogen prevention and conversion of harmful, toxic, and highly reactive carcinogens<\/li>\n<li>gut pH lowering by short-chain fatty acids formed during degradation of non-digestible carbohydrate<\/li>\n<li>host\u2019s innate immunity modulation and enhancement through secretion of anti-inflammatory molecules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When specifically fighting colon cancer, probiotics may have these mechanisms of action, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6775487\/\">2019 study<\/a> in Oncology Reviews:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>enhancing the host\u2019s immune response<\/li>\n<li>altering the metabolic activity of the intestinal microflora<\/li>\n<li>binding and degrading carcinogens<\/li>\n<li>producing antimutagenic compounds<\/li>\n<li>altering the physiochemical conditions in the colon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When it comes to fighting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/227173670_Probiotics_enhance_the_clearance_of_human_papillomavirus-related_cervical_lesions_A_prospective_controlled_pilot_study\">cervical<\/a> cancer, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/227173670_Probiotics_enhance_the_clearance_of_human_papillomavirus-related_cervical_lesions_A_prospective_controlled_pilot_study\">2012 study<\/a> published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention found that probiotics were responsible for the following actions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>normalization of gut microbiota<\/li>\n<li>decrease of harmful substances produced by intestinal bacteria<\/li>\n<li>enhancement of NK [natural killer]-cell activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/227173670_Probiotics_enhance_the_clearance_of_human_papillomavirus-related_cervical_lesions_A_prospective_controlled_pilot_study\">researchers<\/a>\u00a0wrote that the clearance of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical lesions, which are related to cervical cancer in that the lesions often precede the cancer, is likely accomplished by the following actions of probiotics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reconstitution of vaginal (bacterial) microflora<\/li>\n<li>direct killing of pathogens<\/li>\n<li>competition for host-cell receptors<\/li>\n<li>interference with gene expression of pathogens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clearly, probiotics aren\u2019t a \u201cone-trick\u201d bacteria but have several actions that could help to fight cancers.<\/p>\n<h2>Cancer Diagnoses Are Growing<\/h2>\n<p>It should surprise no one that the diagnoses of cancers are growing. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)30925-9\/fulltext\">Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study of 2019<\/a>, 18.7 million people worldwide received a cancer diagnosis in 2010 compared with 23.6 million people in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The occurrence of cancer in people younger than age 50, called early-onset cancer, \u201chas dramatically increased around the world, with the rise beginning around 1990,\u201d according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2022\/09\/researchers-report-dramatic-rise-in-early-onset-cancers\/\">The Harvard Gazette<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, as those who have had cancer or had friends and family with cancer know, treatment is seldom a cure and can have disappointing results.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does cancer have \u201cno suitable cure existing till now,\u201d according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0753332220306028\">2020 study<\/a> in Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy, but \u201cthe safety and stability of the standard chemotherapeutics drugs and synthetic agents used to manage cancer are doubtful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMulti-drugs and hormonal chemotherapeutic agents not only kill the cancer cells but also damage the healthy cells and develop drug resistance. In addition, these cytotoxic drugs are associated with life threatening side effects that mostly result worse than malignancy of the cancer itself,\u201d the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the cancers that have demonstrated encouraging results from treatment with probiotics include the following:<\/p>\n<h2>Colon Cancer<\/h2>\n<p>Colon cancer, or colorectal cancer (CRC),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7803265\/#:~:text=Propionibacterium%20freudenreichii%2C%20a%20probiotic%20in,lines%20%5B127%E2%80%93129%5D.\">causes<\/a> nearly 700,000 deaths each year, and only lung, liver, and gastric cancers are more fatal. Because of its human toll and probiotics\u2019 localization in the intestines, the effect of probiotics on this type of cancer has been particularly studied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccumulating evidence indicates that changes in the gut microenvironment, such as undesirable changes in the microbiota composition, provide favorable conditions for intestinal inflammation and shaping the tumor growth environment, whereas administration of certain probiotics can reverse this situation to a certain extent,\u201d a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7803265\/#:~:text=Propionibacterium%20freudenreichii%2C%20a%20probiotic%20in,lines%20%5B127%E2%80%93129%5D\">2020 study<\/a>\u00a0in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA double-blind test of synbiotics \u2026 [a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics] in 37 patients with CRC [colorectal cancer] and 43 colonic polypectomy patients [those who had colorectal polyps removed] demonstrated that the abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium [two probiotics] increased, whereas that of Clostridium perfringens [a food poisoning-linked bacterium] decreased in CRC patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In patients who had polyps removed, the researchers wrote that the \u201csynbiotic intervention inhibited the colorectal cell proliferation ability and colon cell necrosis ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other researchers agree, writing in the journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6835638\/\">Nutrients<\/a>\u00a0in 2019, \u201cThe prevention of colorectal cancer is associated with favorable quantitative and qualitative changes in the intestinal microbiota, as well as changes in metabolic activity and in the physicochemical conditions of the intestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Cervical Cancer<\/h2>\n<p>Each year, 13,000<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/cervical\/statistics\/index.htm\"> women<\/a> in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 4,000 die. Both the \u201cPap smear\u201d and problematic vaccines such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.millerandzois.com\/gardasil-hpv-vaccine-lawsuit.html\"> Gardasil<\/a> are designed to mitigate that number.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2405457722000663#!\">Research<\/a> published in Clinical Nutrition ESPEN in April states that \u201cnumerous clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of probiotics in preventing cervical cancer, but their dosages, bacterial strains, and duration of therapy are somewhat inconsistent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/eurjcancerprev\/fulltext\/2013\/01000\/probiotics_enhance_the_clearance_of_human.7.aspx\">2013 study<\/a> in the\u00a0European Journal of Cancer Prevention\u00a0found that women who took probiotics had a \u201ctwice as high (60 percent compared to 31 percent) chance of clearance of their HPV-infection-related cytological abnormality as a control group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As noted earlier, HPV infections can progress into cervical cancer.<\/p>\n<h2>Breast Cancer<\/h2>\n<p>Each year in the United States, about 264,000\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/breast\/basic_info\/index.htm\">women<\/a> are diagnosed with breast cancer, 42,000 of whom die.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6775487\/\">2019 study<\/a>\u00a0in Oncology Reviews noted that probiotics show efficacy with breast cancer in an animal study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results showed a significant increase in the survival time among the L. acidophilus [a probiotic] group compared to that of the controls, demonstrating that this treatment can promote the immune responses via stimulation of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-\u03b3 [interferon gamma] and inhibition of the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-4 [interleukin 4] and IL-10 [interleukin 10]. Additional animal studies confirmed that oral administration of L. acidophilus displays anticancer activity in mice bearing breast tumors,\u201d the study reads.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32878124\/\">2020 study<\/a> in the journal\u00a0Cancers, researchers wrote: \u201cSeveral in vivo and in vitro studies show remarkable evidence that diet, probiotics and prebiotics could exert important anticarcinogenic effects in BC [breast cancer]. Moreover, gut microbiota have an important role in the metabolism of chemotherapeutic drugs and in the activity of immunogenic chemotherapies since they are a potential dominant mediator in the response to cancer therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some U.S. government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6775487\/\">clinical<\/a>\u00a0trials on the effect of probiotics in breast cancer treatment are underway.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Conditions That May Respond to Probiotics<\/h2>\n<p>Many Epoch Times readers might know that pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers, representing a high mortality rate.<\/p>\n<p>Yet probiotics may even offer hope with this cancer, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8709322\/\">2021 study<\/a> in the journal Nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe link between gut microbiota and pancreatic cancer has been intensively analyzed during the last several years,\u201d the researchers wrote. \u201cAlterations of gut microbiota affect pancreatic carcinogenesis. Microbes may affect the tumorigenic pathway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe supplementation of gut microbiota with methods, such as administration of prebiotics, probiotics, next-generation probiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation may open new therapeutic strategies for pancreatic cancer patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Addressing gut conditions may also be helpful with Parkinson\u2019s disease, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8776990\/\">2021 research<\/a> in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccumulating evidence suggests that the onset of non-motor symptoms, such as gastrointestinal manifestations, often precede the onset of motor symptoms and disease diagnosis, lending support to the potential role that the microbiome-gut-brain axis might play in the underlying pathological mechanisms of Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d the reviewers wrote, addressing \u201cexisting evidence related to pre- and probiotic interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rheumatoid arthritis has become an increasingly common diagnosis with many expensive medications advertised to treat it. However, more natural approaches with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/courtneymedicalgroupaz.com\/2019\/08\/09\/7558\/\">probiotics<\/a> are also yielding encouraging results.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Courtney Medical Group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/courtneymedicalgroupaz.com\/2019\/08\/09\/7558\/\">website<\/a>, \u201cIn a 2014 study published in the journal Nutrition, 46 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were divided into two groups. One group received daily supplements containing Lactobacilluscasei and the other group received a placebo. After an eight-week period, several markers of inflammation were significantly lower in the probiotic group, leading researchers to state that, although further studies are needed to confirm the results, these conclusions may lead to the use of probiotics as an adjunct therapy for patients with RA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another<a href=\"https:\/\/courtneymedicalgroupaz.com\/2019\/08\/09\/7558\/\"> study<\/a>, both patients with arthritic conditions and healthy patients saw a reduction in inflammation, which is very often behind pain.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Sources of Probiotics <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>While there\u2019s a cornucopia of probiotic products at your grocery store or health food store, some foods also provide probiotics naturally:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sauerkraut<\/li>\n<li>Cottage cheese<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/facty.com\/food\/nutrition\/13-probiotic-foods-to-add-to-your-diet\/3\/\">Yogurt<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Kefir (fermented cow, goat, or sheep milk)<\/li>\n<li>Kombucha (a fermented black or green tea)<\/li>\n<li>Miso (a soybean paste fermented with koji)<\/li>\n<li>Pickles (yes pickles!
