As we say with most things you come across in a national park, whether it be a banana slug, unfamiliar mushroom, or a large toad with glowing eyes in the dead of night, please refrain from licking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Colorado river toad measures seven inches long; it emits a \u201cweak, low-pitched toot, lasting less than a second.\u201d It can live for 20 years while hibernating underground for most of each year, only to appear after heavy summer rains.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ctoads are found in southern parts of Arizona, New Mexico, California, and Texas as well as in Florida and Hawaii,\u201d the National Capital Poison Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/poisoning-from-amphibians-204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a>. \u201cThese toads have poison glands on their backs and behind their eyes that produce a toxic fluid with several kinds of chemical compounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NCPC adds that the toads secrete cardioactive steroids that can \u201ccause serious, life-threatening toxicity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet \u201ctoad medicine circles\u201d have proliferated. \u201cPeople pay anywhere from $250 for a ceremony in the East Texas woods to $8,500 for a more gilded beachfront setting in Tulum, Mexico, to consume the toxin,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/20\/us\/toad-venom-psychedelic.html#:~:text=Toxin%20Is%20Booming.-,Some%20Warn%20That&#039;s%20Bad%20for%20the%20Toad.,at%20risk%20of%20population%20collapse.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, psychedelic enthusiasts have been rounding up Sonoran Desert toads in order to obtain their secretions, which contain a powerful hallucinogenic substance called 5-MeO-DMT,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcn.org\/issues\/53.7\/south-wildlife-a-hallucinogenic-toad-in-peril\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Country News<\/a> reported in June 2021. 5-MeO-DMT can be dried into crystals and then placed in a pipe to be smoked.<\/p>\n<p>The toads have remained abundant in Arizona. Thomas R. Jones, Amphibians and Reptiles Program manager\u00a0with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, admitted, \u201cWe think poaching takes place. And there have been some anecdotal reports of it (happening).
