That\u2019s the confusing if ideologically convenient argument from the paper, as Election Day looms.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s front page heralded campaign reporter Reid Epstein\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/04\/us\/politics\/wisconsin-voting-republicans-supermajorities.html\">Wisconsin Republicans Stand on the Verge of Total, Veto-Proof Power<\/a>.\u201d A corner of Wisconsin threatens to vote Republicans into the state legislature, and democracy is at risk:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img alt=\"\" class=\"image-blog_image_50_ img-fluid blog-img\" data-insert-attach=\"{\" id \/> The three counties in Wisconsin\u2019s far northwest corner make up one of the last patches of rural America that have remained loyal to Democrats through the Obama and Trump years.<\/p>\n<p>But after voting Democratic in every presidential election since 1976, and consistently sending the party\u2019s candidates to the State Legislature for even longer, the area could now defect to the Republican Party. The ramifications would ripple far beyond the shores of Lake Superior.<\/p>\n<p>Epstein warned that if the seats are lost, perhaps because of new and\u00a0even more gerrymandered political maps\u2026<strong>Those northern seats would put Republicans in reach of veto-proof supermajorities that would render a Democratic governor functionally irrelevant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh no! Again, the <em>Times <\/em>shows itself extremely concerned about the political prospects of one particular party, and Epstein&#8217;s been panicking about Wisconsin for weeks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/nb\/clay-waters\/2022\/08\/18\/new-york-times-finds-conservative-racism-mccarthyism-nazism-afoot-3\">Earlier, Epstein claimed<\/a>\u00a0\u201cRepublicans have such control of the levers of power in Wisconsin that voters are almost immaterial.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Epstein now suggests that Democrats and Democracy are pretty much the same thing:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Even though Wisconsin remains a 50-50 state in statewide elections, Democrats would be on the verge of obsolescence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe erosion of our democratic institutions that Republicans are looking to take down should be frightening to anyone,\u201d said John Adams, a Democratic candidate for the State Assembly from Washburn\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Epstein also worried about GOP plans to eliminate the state\u2019s bipartisan elections commission and take direct control of voting procedures and the certification of elections.
