Discovery CEO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/david-zaslav\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-zaslav\" data-tag=\"david-zaslav\">David Zaslav<\/a>\u00a0mentioned the potential to do \u201csomething\u201d with\u00a0controversial \u201cHarry Potter\u201d author J.K. Rowling on another title in the Wizarding World franchise\u00a0\u201cgoing forward\u201d\u00a0during the company\u2019s Q3 earnings call Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\tThe remark was made as part of a lengthy statement about the importance of franchises like DC\u2019s \u201cSuperman,\u201d \u201cBatman\u201d and \u201cAquaman\u201d films, as well as \u201cLord of the Rings,\u201d \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d and \u201cSex and the City\u201d content. It was during this answer the the WBD CEO mentioned his interest in \u201cif we can do something with J.K. on \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re going to have a real focus on franchises,\u201d Zaslav said in response to a question from a media analyst about how content will be \u201cdifferent\u201d under Warner Bros. Discovery from the AT&#038;T-run WarnerMedia era and before. \u201cWe haven\u2019t had a \u2018Superman\u2019 movie in 13 years. We haven\u2019t done a \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 movie in 15 years. The DC movies and the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 movies provided a lot of the profits of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures over the last 25 years. So a focus on the franchise \u2014 one of the big advantages that we have, \u2018House of the Dragon\u2019 is an example of that, \u2018Game of Thrones,\u2019 taking advantage of \u2018Sex and the City,\u2019 \u2018Lord of the Rings,\u2019 we still have the right to do \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019 movies. What are the movies that have brands that are understood and loved everywhere in the world?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\tZaslav continued: \u201cOutside the U.S., most in the aggregate, Europe, Latin America, Asia, have 40% of the theaters that we have here in the U.S. and there is local content. And so when you have a franchise movie, you can often make two to three times the amount of money that you make in the U.S., because you get a slot. And a focus on the big movies that are loved, that are tentpoled, that people are going to leave early from dinner to go to see \u2014 and we have a lot of them. Batman, Superman, Aquaman, if we can do something with JK on \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 going forward, \u2018Lord of the Rings,\u2019 what are we doing with \u2018Game of Thrones\u2019? What are we doing with a lot of the big franchises that we have? We\u2019re focused on franchises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\tRowling first ignited controversy in June 2020 when she posted a series of comments to Twitter in which she argued that discussing gender identity negates biological sex. \u201cIf sex isn\u2019t real, there\u2019s no same-sex attraction,\u201d the author wrote. \u201cIf sex isn\u2019t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased.\u201d The author continued to double down on this same position in the years that followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\tEarlier this year, Rowling feuded online with Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, over the country\u2019s Gender Recognition Reform Bill, which aims to simplify the means by which a transgender person can legally change their gender through obtaining a gender recognition certificate. The certificate allows a trans person to receive a new birth certificate with their correct gender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\tMany \u201cHarry Potter\u201d actors have publicly opposed Rowling. Emma Watson responded to the author\u2019s initial anti-trans comments by writing on Twitter, \u201cI want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are.\u201d Daniel Radcliffe published an open letter proclaiming, \u201cTransgender women are women.\u201d Radcliffe recently said that <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/daniel-radcliffe-against-jk-rowling-anti-trans-beliefs-1235420177\/\">speaking out against Rowling in 2020<\/a> was important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\tThere are no active discussions currently with Rowling about developing another \u201cHarry Potter\u201d movie, according to a source at the studio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\tThere is also currently nothing in \u201cthe Wizarding World\u201d in active development at Warner Bros., inclusive of both the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d franchise and \u201cFantastic Beasts\u201d IP. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m\">\n\tThe most recently released content based on Rowling IP from Warner Bros. was the third \u201cFantastic Beasts\u201d film, \u201cThe Secrets of Dumbledore,\u201d in July. That was preceded by a \u201cHarry Potter\u201d reunion special, \u201cReturn to Hogwarts,\u201d that launched on HBO Max last December.
