They\u2019re trying to destroy free speech in America,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to Musk\u2019s tweet was Federalist Society fellow Mike Davis, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mrddmia\/status\/1588557835792953345?s=20&#038;t=sflDiy0gGrWVjNyGYapIdw\">who urged<\/a> the Twitter chief to \u201cname and shame the advertisers who are succumbing to the advertiser boycotts. So we can counter-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-boycott\">boycott<\/a> them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk replied: \u201cThank you. A thermonuclear name &#038; shame is exactly what will happen if this continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Wait-and-See\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Some companies are adopting a \u201cwait-and-see\u201d approach, according to\u00a0Martin Sorrell, founder of advertising giant WPP and chairman of S4 Capital, in remarks at the Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, a coalition of over 40 advocacy groups wrote an open letter (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepress.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-11\/coalition_open_letter_to_twitter_top_20_advertisers_final.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) to some of Twitter\u2019s leading advertisers calling for an ad boycott if Musk \u201cfollows through on his plans to undermine brand safety and community standards including gutting content moderation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even President Joe Biden piled on with criticism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/biden-frets-that-free-speech-absolutist-elon-musk-bought-twitter-that-spews-lies_4843970.html\">saying at<\/a> a Democratic fundraiser on Friday that\u00a0\u201cwe are all worried\u201d that Musk\u2014a self-avowed free speech \u201cabsolutist\u201d\u2014bought a platform that \u201cspews lies across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk, for his part, insisted in an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1585619322239561728\">open letter<\/a> of his own that\u00a0he would not allow the platform to become a \u201cfree-for-all hellscape\u201d where anything could be said \u201cwith no consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to adhering to the laws of the land, our platform must be warm and welcoming to all,\u201d Musk wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He later said in a post on Twitter that the company remains committed to moderating content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be crystal clear, Twitter\u2019s strong commitment to content moderation remains absolutely unchanged,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1588666105023041536?s=20&#038;t=HgAXriWk1ZGTPjLax380Mw\">he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, we have actually seen hateful speech at times this week decline *below* our prior norms, contrary to what you may read in the press,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Moderation Actions Have \u2018Stayed Steady\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Twitter\u2019s head of safety and integrity Yoel Roth said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yoyoel\/status\/1588657230836305920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet thread<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that the daily volume of content \u201cmoderation actions\u201d that Twitter has taken has \u201cstayed steady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith early voting underway in the U.S., our efforts on election integrity\u2014including harmful misinformation that can suppress the vote and combatting state-backed information operations\u2014remain a top priority,\u201d Roth wrote, adding that the layoffs Musk announced earlier only impacted around 15 percent of\u00a0Twitter\u2019s Trust and Safety group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we said goodbye to incredibly talented friends and colleagues yesterday, our core moderation capabilities remain in place,\u201d Roth added.<\/p>\n<p>Even before he bought Twitter for around $44 billion, Musk hinted at job cuts, telling\u00a0employees at a town-hall meeting this summer that there needs to be \u201ca rationalization of headcount\u201d at Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Musk defended his decision to go ahead with mass layoffs by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1588671155766194176?s=20&#038;t=HgAXriWk1ZGTPjLax380Mw\">saying that<\/a>\u00a0he had \u201cno choice\u201d as Twitter was losing over $4 million per day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone exited was offered 3 months of severance, which is 50% more than legally required,\u201d Musk added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"author_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"one_author_block round\">\n<div class=\"top_row\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/author-tom-ozimek\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/WEB_TomOzimek-_1.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Ozimek\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Follow<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tom Ozimek has a broad background in journalism, deposit insurance, marketing and communications, and adult education.
