After Democratic overreach in Richmond, many voters had buyers&#8217; remorse about the statewide blueward shift. Republicans also flipped back the House of Delegates, one of two lawmaking bodies comprising Virginia\u2019s General Assembly, after losing it two years before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Governor Youngkin recently mused that Virginia is the headwaters from which the red waves commences. He\u2019s right. Should Republicans sweep House, Senate, and gubernatorial seats next Tuesday\u2013an increasingly likely prospect\u2013Virginia will be cited as an inflection point.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There are many parallels to draw between the 2021 Virginia gubernatorial election and competitive 2022 midterms races.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Much to the chagrin of Democrats, many legislative seats are in play for Republicans this year. Who would have guessed House seats in California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Oregon, among many, being competitive? (I didn\u2019t!) Or Senate seats like New Hampshire\u2019s, for instance, now being in play? Real Clear Politics predicts Republicans could control upwards of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/senate\/elections-map-rcp-projection.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">54<\/a> Senate seats and some predict the GOP could capture as high as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fox-news-power-rankings-republicans-expected-control-house-both-parties-hold-pathways-senate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">249<\/a> House seats.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Critics and naysayers similarly downplayed the Virginia results\u2014calling it a fluke. The D.C. press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/virginia-governor-election-glenn-youngkin-race-11635979212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> Virginia\u2019s new top office holders of being white supremacists. (Two of the three elected officials, mind you, aren\u2019t white.) The deplorable Lincoln Project <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/10\/29\/glenn-youngkin-aide-accuses-terry-mcauliffe-team-of-fake-white-supremacist-stunt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stoked<\/a> racial division in Charlottesville. Critics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2021\/11\/06\/democrats-can-defeat-trumpism--even-when-its-wearing-a-fleece-vest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduced<\/a> Youngkin\u2019s victory to \u201cTrumpism in a vest.\u201d But none of these gross mischaracterizations stuck. Virginia voters outwitted the Democratic machine, Richmond and D.C. press, and consultant class to usher in change here in Old Dominion.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As was the case here in Virginia, pocketbook issues are motivating voters to the polls to counter the Biden administration\u2019s disastrous policies.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Crime, inflation, and the economy have emerged as top issues in competitive races across the country\u2014even in blue outposts like New York and Oregon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the Empire State, crime is top of mind for voters. This past week, 70 New York City Latino supermarket owners who typically vote Democrat cumulatively <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/10\/31\/latino-supermarket-owners-back-lee-zeldin-with-70k-fundraiser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">donated<\/a>\u00a0$70,000 to Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin\u2019s ascendent gubernatorial campaign. This comes after the appointed New York Governor, Kathy Hochul, pulled her own Terry McAuliffe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=kathy+hochul+crime+gop+data+make+up&#038;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS884US884&#038;oq=kathy+hochul+crime+gop+data+make+up&#038;aqs=chrome..69i57j33i10i160.5441j0j7&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claiming<\/a> Republican concern about crime is an invented conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Oregon\u2013a state that hasn\u2019t been governed by Republicans in over four decades\u2013is now competitive due to rampant crime, homelessness, and drugs. It also doesn\u2019t hurt that this is a three-way race. Christine Drazan, a stalwart conservative, has garnered bipartisan support for her campaign from unlikely folks\u2014including lifelong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsense.news\/p\/why-lifelong-democrats-in-oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democratic voters<\/a> to Nike co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/nike-co-founder-donates-1m-republican-running-governor-oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phil Knight<\/a>. This race\u2019s outcome, if trends hold up for Drazan, will shock the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Concern for pocketbook issues similarly influenced Virginia voters to reject leftist policies. Parents were rightfully angered by Critical Race Theory, schools abandoning merit-based admissions processes, and former Governor Terry McAuliffe (D-VA)\u2019s famous <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/campaign\/578885-education-blunder-igniting-suburban-parents-driving-mcauliffe-panic-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confession<\/a>, \u201cI don\u2019t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.\u201d`\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This admission ignited a firestorm by Virginia parents, even in deep blue Northern Virginia, to punish Democrats and elect changemakers to office. Along with displeasure in one-party Democratic rule in Richmond, education and the botched Afghanistan withdrawal worked against Virginia Democrats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Democrats outside Virginia are following the same playbook of projecting their bad policies onto their Republican opponents. Don\u2019t be surprised if next week\u2019s midterm results show different voting blocs\u2014independents, suburban women, black Americans, and Latinos\u2013pulling the lever for Republicans en masse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There\u2019s a 25 point <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/white-suburban-women-swing-toward-backing-republicans-for-congress-11667381402\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">net shift<\/a> to Republican candidates from, you guessed it, white suburban women. The same ladies who, just two years ago, voted for Biden because he was billed as a nice, old man. But his perceived niceness has resulted in very mean policies: higher gas prices, expensive groceries, soaring energy costs, and rampant violent crime, for example. Who could blame them for coming back home? \u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A new USA Today\/Suffolk University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/10\/27\/republicans-resurgent-economy-midterms\/10596369002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> also shed light on GOP gains among minority voters, revealing these astounding findings:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The issue of inflation \u2013 and the feeling that the White House hasn&#8217;t done enough to address it \u2013 is helping Republicans score significant inroads among Hispanic and Black voters, both demographic groups that Democrats have long relied on for support. Now 40% of Hispanics and 21% of Blacks are backing the Republican candidate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If this holds up next Tuesday and into 2024, Democrats are in deep trouble going forward.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The same gains among similar constituencies was witnessed by the Youngkin-Sears-Miyares ticket. They <a href=\"https:\/\/graphics.reuters.com\/USA-ELECTION\/VIRGINIA\/gkplgdmzavb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recovered<\/a> some lost ground made by President Trump in Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Hampton Roads. Independents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/02\/politics\/virginia-exit-polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">favored<\/a> them too.
