Now, research suggests that getting a child\u2019s asthma under control may include assessing a parent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-mental-health\">mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at University of Texas Southwestern found that treating a parent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-depression\">depression<\/a> could sometimes improve symptom control in asthmatic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-children\">children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About 8 percent of American children have asthma. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing due to inflammation of the lungs and airways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, asthma is a medical illness that is sensitive to a patient\u2019s mood as well as medication adherence,\u201d said\u00a0<a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/doctors\/e-brown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. E. Sherwood Brown<\/a>, a professor of psychiatry.<\/p>\n<p>Stress and depression in children who have asthma can cause airway constriction and worsen symptoms. Then, this poor asthma control can exacerbate a child\u2019s depression. High rates of depression among caregivers may also put stress on kids, worsening their depressive symptoms and asthma control, the researchers noted.<\/p>\n<p>To study the issue, the investigators followed caregivers with major depressive disorder and their children with persistent asthma for one year.<\/p>\n<p>They found that improvement in caregiver depression was associated with fewer asthma attacks and better asthma control for children.<\/p>\n<p>This improvement in asthma control occurred, in part, through a reduction in the children\u2019s depressive symptom severity.<\/p>\n<p>Healthcare providers may need to think more broadly when treating patients, Brown said in a university news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might be useful to screen for depression both in children with asthma and their caregivers,\u201d Brown said. \u201cIdentifying depression in the caregiver and providing effective treatment might help improve asthma control in the child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lung disorder experts often see depression in their higher-risk asthma patients, said\u00a0<a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/doctors\/andrew-gelfand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Andrew Gelfand<\/a>, a UT Southwestern pulmonologist who was not involved in the study.
