And although, like all drugs, it comes with its own sets of warnings and cautions, this type of medication\u2014known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID\u2014is a popular choice when it comes to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/pharmacist-pain-reliever-recommendation-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">addressing pain relief<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Estimates suggest that about 15 percent <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/are-you-taking-too-much-anti-inflammatory-medication-2018040213540\" target=\"_blank\">of the US population<\/a> takes an NSAID regularly (including those that are over the counter and prescription strength),&#8221; reports Harvard Health. &#8220;Along with sporadic users, more than 30 billion doses are taken each year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Ibuprofen] works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body,&#8221; explains <strong>Rima Arora<\/strong>, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dirxhealth.com\/our-mission\" target=\"_blank\">at DiRx Health<\/a>.&#8221; It is used to reduce fever and treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/thunderclap-headache-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">such as headache<\/a>, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps, or some minor injuries.&#8221; But what exactly happens to your body when you take ibuprofen? NSAIDs also work well fighting back pain, menstrual cramps and headaches,&#8221; says the site.<\/p>\n<p>Ibuprofen can be a very effective way to address pain relief. It&#8217;s inexpensive, available, and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/tips\/ibuprofen-patient-tips\" target=\"_blank\">does not cause dependence<\/a>, Drugs.com points out. Many of the survey participants &#8220;were neither aware of nor believed they were at risk for side effects from NSAID,&#8221; reports the site. In addition, the authors found that &#8220;OTC analgesics including NSAID are widely used, are frequently taken inappropriately and potentially dangerously, and users are generally unaware of the potential for adverse side effects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the better-known downsides of ibuprofen is that it can be <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/ibuprofen-on-empty-stomach\" target=\"_blank\">hard on your stomach<\/a>. Ibuprofen usage carries the &#8220;risk of ulceration, bleeding, and perforation of the stomach, small intestine, or large intestine which can be fatal,&#8221; cautions Arora. According to Healthline, this is because ibuprofen affects prostaglandin levels. When it comes to renal effects, &#8220;patients at the highest risks include those with impaired renal function, heart failure, liver dysfunction, those taking diuretics and ACED inhibitors and the elderly,&#8221; says Arora. &#8220;NSAIDs can make your body retain fluid and decrease the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/hypertension-high-blood-pressure\/guide\/medications-cause\" target=\"_blank\">function of your kidneys<\/a> [and] this may cause your blood pressure to rise even higher, putting greater stress on your heart and kidneys,&#8221; WebMD reports. &#8220;NSAIDs can also raise your risk for heart attack or stroke, especially in higher doses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because ibuprofen and other NSAIDs can cause salt and water retention in the kidneys, &#8220;they can also make some blood pressure-lowering medicines, such as ACE inhibitors and diuretics, less effective\u2014and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/news\/behind-the-headlines\/ibuprofen-and-heart-failure\" target=\"_blank\">a rise in blood pressure<\/a> is likely to worsen heart failure,&#8221; says the British Health Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>To <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.safemedication.com\/pharmacist-insights\/2021\/09\/03\/how-to-use-nsaids-safely\" target=\"_blank\">avoid these conditions<\/a>, Safe Medication advises using the lowest possible dose of ibuprofen, taking it (and other NSAIDs) with food or milk to help avoid stomach problems, and avoiding alcohol while taking NSAIDs.<\/p>\n<p><em>Best Life offers the most up-to-date information from top experts, new research, and health agencies, but our content is not meant to be a substitute for professional guidance.
