From a subscription service to possibly reviving the video app Vine, Musk wants the platform to reach its \u201cextraordinary potential\u201d following his $44 billion takeover.<\/p>\n<p>While change is coming, how will the\u00a0San Francisco-based company be different now that Musk is in charge of the social network? Here are six sweeping changes that he has proposed:<\/p>\n<h2>Content Moderation Council<\/h2>\n<p>The self-described \u201cChief Twit\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1586059953311137792\">confirmed<\/a> in an Oct. 28 Twitter post that Twitter will be establishing a \u201ccontent moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints.\u201d He confirmed that \u201cno major content decisions or account reinstatements\u201d will happen before the council convenes.<\/p>\n<p>He later clarified with a Twitter post that \u201cwe have not yet made any changes\u201d to the company\u2019s content policies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4707275\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/09\/1.shutterstock_2111431682.jpg-1200x900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-medium wp-image-4707275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1.shutterstock_2111431682.jpg-600x450-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4707275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1.shutterstock_2111431682.jpg-600x450-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Whistleblower: Chinese spy worked for Twitter.<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTwitter will not allow anyone who was de-platformed for violating Twitter rules back on the platform until we have a clear process for doing so, which will take at least a few more weeks,\u201d Musk wrote. \u201cTwitter\u2019s content moderation council will include representatives with widely divergent views, which will certainly include the civil rights community and groups who face hate-fueled violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The details remain unclear. Meanwhile, there are many questions, such as what will the\u00a0council\u2019s guiding principles be, how many people will serve on the council, how they will be appointed, and how it will be different from Twitter\u2019s current content moderation program?<\/p>\n<p>Musk has said before that he\u2019s open to restoring accounts of individuals who have been given lifetime bans, including former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<h2>$8 Monthly Fee<\/h2>\n<p>The biggest change could involve an $8-per-month subscription service that would allow subscribers to obtain the much-desired blue checkmark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter\u2019s current lords &#038; peasants system for who has or doesn\u2019t have a blue checkmark is bull[expletive],\u201d Musk wrote on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1587498907336118274\">Twitter<\/a>. \u201cPower to the people! Blue for $8\/month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a Twitter thread on Nov. 1, he revealed that users would receive \u201cpriority in replies, mentions &#038; search,\u201d which he says is \u201cessential to defeat spam\/scam.\u201d Subscribers also would be given the option to post long audio and video and enjoy a \u201cpaywall bypass\u201d for publishers willing to partner with Twitter. Paid users would also see \u201chalf as many ads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will also give Twitter a revenue stream to reward content creators,\u201d he noted in a Twitter post.<\/p>\n<p>Musk wrote in a separate Twitter post, \u201cEssentially, this raises the cost of crime on Twitter by several orders of magnitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The proposal has caused quite a stir on the social media platform.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), for example, mocked the idea in a Twitter post as \u201ca billionaire earnestly trying to sell people on the idea that \u2018free speech\u2019 is actually a [sic] $8\/mo subscription plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Lmao at a billionaire earnestly trying to sell people on the idea that \u201cfree speech\u201d is actually a $8\/mo subscription plan<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1587647032457449473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1587911540770222081\">replied<\/a>, \u201cYour feedback is appreciated, now pay $8.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new service also garnered the attention of best-selling novelist Stephen King, who warned that he would be \u201cgone like Enron\u201d if a purported $20 monthly fee were implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1587312517679878144\">told<\/a> King that \u201cwe need to pay the bills somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?\u201d he wrote in a Twitter post.<\/p>\n<h2>Workforce<\/h2>\n<p>The New York Times reported on Oct. 30 that the new Twitter owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/29\/technology\/twitter-layoffs-musk-jobs.html\">ordered<\/a> job cuts across the company. According to the newspaper, layoffs would occur before Nov. 1, when employees were scheduled to receive stock grants as part of their compensation.<\/p>\n<p>Musk denied the report, responding in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1586831721386766337?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">Twitter<\/a>\u00a0post that \u201cthis is false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This comes soon after The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/20\/musk-twitter-acquisition-staff-cuts\/\">reported<\/a> that Musk had plans to terminate 75 percent of the Twitter workforce, which also was denied by the billionaire CEO. However, a separate Bloomberg News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-02\/musk-plans-to-eliminate-half-of-twitter-jobs-in-cost-cut-drive?sref=Oeyjq8by\">report<\/a> noted that Musk would slash Twitter\u2019s payroll by 50 percent\u20143,700 jobs\u2014as early as Nov. 4 to help cut costs. The report, which cited anonymous people close to the situation, also suggested that the company\u2019s work-from-anywhere policy would be rescinded, as most of the remaining staff would be required to work from the office.<\/p>\n<p>Musk has yet to confirm or deny the Bloomberg story.<\/p>\n<p>But while it\u2019s unclear whether Musk has intentions to hand out pink slips to large numbers of personnel, one of his first acts consisted of firing several executives, including CEO Parag Agrawal, finance chief Ned Segal, and legal affairs and policy chief Vijaya Gadde.<\/p>\n<h2>The \u2018Everything App\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Another idea that Musk has floated around is turning Twitter into something akin to a Swiss Army knife. It would transform into an all-in-one tool to do anything, comparable to China\u2019s WeChat. That app has more than a billion monthly users, as it allows the participants to social network, send money, reserve a restaurant table, book ride shares and airplane tickets, and execute e-commerce transactions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app,\u201d Musk wrote in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1577428272056389633?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">Twitter post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He told Twitter employees in June, \u201cYou basically live on WeChat in China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tech experts agree that it would be a challenging ecosystem to develop, mainly because of the logistical issues requiring enormous in-house infrastructure and broad partnerships with other companies. Privacy concerns would be another hurdle, as a super app would allow the company to know everything about its users.<\/p>\n<h2>Open-Source Algorithm<\/h2>\n<p>Musk has repeatedly expressed his goal to open-source Twitter\u2019s algorithm. This would foster greater transparency and trust in the website, as opening up the algorithm allows users to learn how Twitter promotes or demotes content. An open-source algorithm would essentially show how platform engineers maintain the social media outlet and let users make suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>In March, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1507041396242407424\">published a poll<\/a> that found 82 percent of respondents agreed that the Twitter algorithm should be open source.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Bring Back Vine?\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Could Twitter directly compete with TikTok by bringing back the video app Vine?<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@vine\/important-news-about-vine-909c5f4ae7a7#.bmejtmwgx\">discontinued<\/a> the looping-video app after purchasing it in 2012.
