Wade, all while pushing their extreme pro-abortion viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p>The recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/entertainment\">episode,<\/a> \u201cMaybe Tomorrow,\u201d explores a world with restricted access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/abortion\">abortion<\/a>. Showrunners spoke with TV Line about their motivations and aims for the episode, which had leftist fans applauding, and conservatives swearing they were done with the series forever.<\/p>\n<p>The episode begins with a montage showing hospital staff realizing <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> had been overturned, which was presented as a catastrophic event. Each character then dealt with the aftermath in their own way. Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) admits she had an abortion in the past which \u201cwas not a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One doctor punches a protestor outside the hospital, and \u201cNew Amsterdam\u201d staffers panic because he\u2019s gay and they\u2019re concerned about the courts outlawing same-sex marriage. At various points in the episode, Max inquires about opening an abortion clinic on a military base and setting up a floating clinic to circumvent new laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese kinds of issues, both in our country and the healthcare industry, is why I wrote the show to begin with, is why I created New Amsterdam,\u201d showrunner David Schulner told <a href=\"https:\/\/tvline.com\/2022\/11\/01\/new-amsterdam-season-5-episode-7-roe-v-wade-abortion-preview\/\">TVLine<\/a> in an interview. \u201cAs depressing and horrifying as it was, the show was made to tackle these issues. And so, we all put in everything we had into the episode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Promo 5.07 \u201cMaybe Tomorrow\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NewAmsterdam?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NewAmsterdam<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lEX8n1H4hI\">pic.twitter.com\/lEX8n1H4hI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \ud83e\udd8bNessi\ud83e\udd8b (@nesssinhamatos) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nesssinhamatos\/status\/1585104957770203136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 26, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The executive producer said he was surprised NBC allowed them to tackle the topic at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause my worry was they weren\u2019t going to let us do this episode,\u201d Schulner said, \u201cand the response when we handed it in [was], \u2018We were waiting to see what you would do with this.\u2019 So that\u2019s the kind of support we got, and [we] couldn\u2019t be more grateful for that, to have partners like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schulner also said he related to the character Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) on a personal level because he was thinking own children while conceiving the storyline. The showrunner repeats the erroneous belief that restrictions on abortion will also ban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dont-believe-pro-abortion-misinformation-what-to-know-about-ectopic-pregnancy-miscarriage-and-more\">procedures related to miscarriage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will speak to Max\u2019s character as a parent myself, raising two small children. I would never let my kids go to a college in a state that outlawed abortion,\u201d Schulner continues. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe used to spend Thanksgivings in Texas every year. I don\u2019t want to go to Texas anymore. If you have an ectopic pregnancy, if you\u2019re having a miscarriage, doctors are afraid to save your life because they can be prosecuted. We are not safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The interviewer asked Schulner if there was any debate in the writer\u2019s room between staffers with pro-life and pro-abortion beliefs. His answer was unsurprising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur room is, I would say, primarily pro-choice, if not entirely pro-choice. But the discussions that we had were basically how do we dramatize not just this decision, but what are the repercussions that this decision is going to have for the other characters?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/1067988\/new-amsterdam-season-5-episode-7-recap-maybe-tomorrow\/\">episode<\/a>, the character Max laments about a world without abortion to his young daughter. \u201cA sad thing happened today. Not just to me, to everybody. And I guess it made Daddy a little sad, a little mad, and a little frustrated,\u201d Max says. \u201cI wanted to make the world a little better for you. I couldn\u2019t do it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Luna asks, \u201cMaybe tomorrow?\u201d to which Mac replies, \u201cmaybe not even tomorrow, but I\u2019m not going to stop trying.
