So now the president is saying that he wants to tax energy companies, a windfall tax because of the profits that they make. \u2026 Why not make that investment in making us energy independent because right now we are far from it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m 1,000 percent for that, 1,000 percent!\u201d Ryan said. \u201cI\u2019m just saying we don\u2019t want to do fracking on federal lands. I\u2019d like to do it wherever else we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-rumble-com wp-block-embed-rumble-com\"><\/figure>\n<p>On the presidential campaign trail, however, Ryan propped up plans to regulate fracking out of business, the consequences of which can\u2019t be overstated. In 2014, as many as 95 percent of new wells were being drilled with fracking technology,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-secretary-ernest-monizs-statement-senate-committee-appropriations-driving-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the Energy Department. Hydraulic fracturing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=34732#:~:text=Hydraulic%20fracturing%20involves%20forcing%20a,wedges%20open%20the%20expanding%20fractures.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still accounts<\/a>\u00a0for most new oil and gas wells today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/28\/ohios-tim-ryan-only-supports-natural-gas-when-hes-in-a-close-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ohio\u2019s Tim Ryan Only Supports Natural Gas When He\u2019s In A Close Race<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/politics\/policy-2020\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview <\/a>with The Washington Post, Ryan left open the door to ban fracking if lawmakers refuse to ramp up regulation, and he didn\u2019t make any distinction between federal and private lands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to significantly ramp up our oversight and regulation of the industry and its practices, especially in regard to its use and disposal of water, as well as methane leaks,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cIf the industry cannot rapidly innovate on these issues, I believe the federal government would need to step in and halt fracking operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio congressman, who\u2019s voted with the White House agenda <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/biden-congress-votes\/house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100 percent<\/a> of the time, also defended President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-climate-change-environment-and-nature-business-9751c4909a8b1baba28f3bcff9d5fa6e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegal<\/a>\u00a0suspension of oil and gas operations on federal land just last year in the early days of the new administration. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great compromise that protects our national parks and federal land while still allows the pursuit of natural gas,\u201d Ryan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vindy.com\/news\/local-news\/2021\/01\/biden-drilling-order-shows-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s immediate halt to new leases, which lasted 18 months, handicapped the oil and gas industry and stemmed from a cascade of regulations that sent energy prices to new heights. Eleven percent of the nation\u2019s gas production comes from public lands and waters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/news-policy-and-issues\/blog\/2022\/03\/24\/drilling-down-on-federal-leasing-facts#:~:text=The%20Truth%3A%20Oil%20production%20from,total%20U.S.%20natural%20gas%20production.\">according<\/a> to the American Petroleum Institute. By June, Americans were paying a record average of $5.01 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to AAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan also championed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-inflation-reduction-act-is-anything-but-spending-power-supply-demand-imbalance-restrictions-regulation-11659289812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dubiously named<\/a> Inflation Reduction Act, which comes with $<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/09\/democrats-spending-bill-includes-20-billion-in-new-energy-taxes-that-will-drive-prices-higher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 billion<\/a>\u00a0in new taxes on energy.<\/p>\n<p>During his presidential run, Ryan also touted plans to eliminate coal as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/26\/tim-ryan-touted-plans-to-eliminate-coal-as-amazing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amazing<\/a>.\u201d At a New Hampshire candidate forum with Maryland Rep. John Delaney, Ryan celebrated the radical climate package by Democrat presidential rival and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee as model legislation. Ryan said Inslee\u2019s platform featured \u201cone of the most amazing plans around climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInslee\u2019s plan does not chart a forgiving path for coal,\u201d The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/03\/us\/politics\/jay-inslee-climate-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported <\/a>on the proposal. \u201cIt calls for retiring what it labels as the \u2018increasingly uneconomical U.S. coal fleet\u2019 by 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohiocoal.com\/information-library\/quick-facts.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a>\u00a0to the Ohio Coal Association, the coal industry employs 33,000 Ohioans.<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio Senate contest over retiring GOP Sen. Rob Portman\u2019s seat remains among the most critical to Republicans hoping to capture a majority in the upper chamber. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/senate\/oh\/ohio_senate_vance_vs_ryan-7624.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According <\/a>to RealClearPolitics\u2019 latest aggregate of polls, Republican venture capitalist J.D. Vance is up by just more than 2 points despite the fact that polls are often manipulated to drive media narratives that benefit Democrats.
