Gavin Newsom said he is worried that a \u201cred wave\u201d will take place as Democrats continue to get \u201ccrushed\u201d on their messaging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt goes to my fundamental grievance with my damn party,\u201d Newsom said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/california-governor-gavin-newsom-presidential-run-joe-biden-midterms-kevin-mccarthy\/\">CBS News<\/a> that aired on Wednesday. \u201cWe\u2019re getting crushed on narrative. We\u2019re going to have to do better in terms of getting on the offense and stop being on the damn defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether he feels a \u201cred wave\u201d is coming, Newsom responded that he does feel like the tide is turning in favor of Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course it does [feel like a red wave]. I\u2019m not paid to say that,\u201d he told CBS reporter Major Garrett. \u201c\u2018Fate and feel,\u2019 I get it. I can be the cheerleader, but I\u2019m also pragmatic. You feel it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsom then admitted the idea that Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) might ascend to House majority leader evokes fear in him. \u201cIt scares the hell out of me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are expected to lose their majority in the House, as most election forecasters are predicting a more or less definitive victory for Republicans in this year\u2019s House races, where all 435 seats are open for grabs.<\/p>\n<p>FiveThirtyEight, a non-partisan forecaster, estimates there is a better than a four in five chance that Republicans win the House. It also predicts, for the first time since July, that Republicans are likely to capture a majority in the Senate as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Republicans vs Democrats: Different Priorities<\/h2>\n<p>Should Republicans retake the House, according to McCarthy, the first bill they introduce would roll back President Joe Biden\u2019s plan to give the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) a $80 billion boost over a course of 10 years. This additional funding would allow the IRS to hire some 87,000 more agents for tax enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn that very first day that we\u2019re sworn in, you\u2019ll see that it all changes because on our very first bill, we\u2019re going to repeal 87,000 IRS agents,\u201d McCarthy said at a Sept. 23 Pennsylvania event as he introduced the \u201cCommitment to America,\u201d a set of policy priorities focusing on economy, public safety, constitutional rights, and holding federal government accountable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur job is to work for you, not go after you,\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cOur job is to make America strong. We believe America is more than a country. America is an idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Democrats are betting on abortion as their winning issue, vowing to enshrine abortion access into federal law should they secure a majority in both chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at an Oct. 18 event, Biden said he was looking to sign the bill early next year to codify Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that had established abortion as a constitutional right until it was overturned in June. This would require Democrats to not only hold onto control of the House, but also expand the slim 51\u201350 majority they currently have in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFolks, if we do that, here\u2019s the promise I make to you and the American people: The first bill that I will send to the Congress will be to codify Roe v.
