In addition, the number was 1 in 8 for people between the ages of 20 to 64.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The study suggested that the number of people dying prematurely from alcohol use could drop \u201cwith increased implementation of evidenced-based, population-level alcohol policies, such as increasing alcohol taxes or regulating alcohol outlet density.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Excessive use of alcohol is connected to the top causes of death for U.S. adults ages 20 to 64, according to the study. These causes include cancer, \u201cunintentional injury,\u201d and liver and heart disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> found that 85.6% of adults in the U.S. have said they consumed alcohol at some time in their life, with 69.5% having done so in the past year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The pandemic exacerbated the problem of excessive alcohol use as people attempted to cope with lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Research from Cedars-Sinai expert Yee Hui Yeo, MD, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/newsroom\/newsweek-alcohol-abuse-increased-during-covid-pandemic-study-shows\/#:~:text=The%20study%20found%20that%20in,adults%20ages%2025-44%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> a higher death rate from alcohol use or abuse in 2020 and 2021 than in previous years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhat we found in our analysis reflects what we had been seeing anecdotally in our patients and in academic papers tracking complications like alcohol-related liver disease,\u201d Yeo reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The study found that \u201cactual alcohol use disorder-related deaths\u201d were 25% more than projected rates in 2020, according to Cedars-Sinai. In 2021, they were around 22% more than the projected rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAlcohol use disorder is often underreported, so actual mortality rates related to alcohol use may be even higher than reported,\u201d Yeo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2022\/01\/covid-related-drinking-linked-to-rise-in-liver-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/aasldpubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/hep.32272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in Hepatology showed that the uptick in the consumption of alcohol for one year during the pandemic could lead to more alcohol-related deaths and diseases.
