Earlier this year, the FBI investigated the \u201cpotential counterintelligence risks posed by the deal,\u201d according to the Post.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>The outlet cited a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/former-twitter-employees-charged-with-spying-for-saudi-arabia-by-digging-into-the-accounts-of-kingdom-critics\/2019\/11\/06\/2e9593da-00a0-11ea-8bab-0fc209e065a8_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_32\">Saudi<\/a> prince\u2019s holding company and a subsidiary of the Qatari sovereign wealth fund,\u201d a cryptocurrency exchange called Binance that was founded in China but has since moved its operations elsewhere, as investors of potential concern. The Post also noted Musk\u2019s ties to China through his role as CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/tesla-owner-locked-out-of-car-until-he-replaces-26,000-battery\">Tesla<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reviews by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) are typically used to investigate investments by foreign nationals and Musk is a US citizen. The group has reportedly not yet determined if Musk\u2019s purchase of Twitter could trigger a national security review if they are even empowered to do so.<\/p>\n<p>According to the outlet, CFIUS \u201cwould not necessarily scuttle Musk\u2019s acquisition of Twitter\u2026 but the government could impose restrictions on what sorts of information rights are given to foreign parties or seek to limit powers they may have over the new company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post admitted, \u201cTreasury staff routinely examine whether purchases merit more in-depth investigations, often without proceeding to full-blown reviews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/qIjaa\/https:\/twitter.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/1587091081920929796?s=20&#038;t=boJOQWzaLm_wRCa7i8sQOw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that the federal government should investigate national security concerns connected to Saudi Arabian entities\u2019 investments in Twitter. \u201cWe should be concerned that the Saudis, who have a clear interest in repressing political speech and impacting US politics, are now the second-largest owner of a major social media platform,\u201d Murphy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/qIjaa\/https:\/twitter.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/1587091085288947712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Post, \u201cTo trigger a review, the Saudi investment would have to have include special privileges \u2014 such as a board seat as an observer, or access to company information \u2014 beyond those given to an ordinary small investor in a public company. The terms of the deal as described to The Post would do that.
