Version: 4.0.47--><p>As more and more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/children\">children<\/a> are exposed to the concept of gender identity, many youngsters are experimenting with using clothing to smash down body parts they don\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p>A growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/31\/well\/transgender-teens-binders.html\">number<\/a> of children and teens are turning to \u201ctucking\u201d their male genitals or \u201cbinding\u201d their female breasts as a way to get relief from gender dysphoria or just experiment with their gender.<\/p>\n<p>Tucking and binding have been promoted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/katv.com\/news\/nation-world\/hospital-slammed-for-pediatric-gender-change-guidance-promoting-controversial-practices-portland-oregon-doernbecher-portland-oregon-chindrens-safe-tucking-binding\">some<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chla.org\/sites\/default\/files\/atoms\/files\/Tucking%20English.pdf\">in the<\/a>\u00a0medical community as harmless ways for children to explore their gender, but they come with medical and psychological risks.<\/p>\n<p>Now, some pediatricians are sounding the alarm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe physical risks and harms of tucking should be immediately obvious as it involves manipulating the male genitals into positions which encourage pathology,\u201d said Dr. Jill Simons, co-executive director of the American College of Pediatricians.<\/p>\n<p>Tucking, which sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/transgender\/tucking\">involves<\/a> actually pushing the testes back up into the inguinal canal, can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statsforgender.org\/tucking\/\">cause<\/a>\u00a0negative effects including urinary tract infections, urine flow problems, skin irritation, fungal infections, testicular inflammation, and testicular torsion as well as low sperm count and infertility, Simons said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, binding, or using a tight undergarment to compress female breasts in order to look flat-chested, \u201cnot only harmfully reinforces a negative self image, it is physically harmful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Binding can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/social-issues\/chest-binding-can-lead-to-chronic-pain-this-genderqueer-massage-therapist-wants-to-help\/2018\/12\/26\/cfadf6cc-0493-11e9-9122-82e98f91ee6f_story.html\">cause<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/what-is-chest-binding\">a litany<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statsforgender.org\/binding\/\">negative<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/13691058.2016.1191675?journalCode=tchs20\">effects<\/a> including rib fractures, shortness of breath, back and chest pain that can be chronic, bad posture,\u00a0overheating,\u00a0numbness, lightheadedness, and fungal infections.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors have also <a href=\"https:\/\/ftmtopsurgery.ca\/blog\/ftm-faq\/health-consequences-chest-binding\/\">pointed out<\/a> that\u00a0rib fractures from binding could also puncture and collapse a lung, and tight binding also risks permanent damage to small blood vessels, which could cause blood clots or even a heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>A 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/13691058.2016.1191675?journalCode=tchs20\">study<\/a> found that more than 97% of people reported at least one of 28 different negative effects due to binding.\u00a0Only half the participants bound their breasts daily, and while some used more risky methods like duct tape and plastic wrap, some found that commercial binders caused negative effects as well.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe Cole, who identified as male as a teen but has since detransitioned, said she bound her breasts for two years before getting a double mastectomy.<\/p>\n<p>Even though she was only a B-cup, at a healthy weight, and used properly-fitting binders from a supposedly safe company called GC2B, she still ended up with complications, Cole said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was given the impression that it was generally safe to do as long as I did it \u2018correctly\u2019 and didn\u2019t experience any pain while binding,\u201d Cole told The Daily Wire. \u201cHowever, the binder would uncomfortably trap sweat and stick to the skin on my torso even if I just walked around in the 90-110 degree heat that comes during the warmer months in California.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver time, my ribs slowly became more deformed from binding. To this day, well over two years since I last used a binder, my ribs still flare out slightly. It doesn\u2019t cause me any serious discomfort but I hate the way it makes my body look,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cole added that binding along with taking testosterone also caused her breasts to lose their shape and sag over time, one of the reasons she ended up getting them removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought of my breasts as \u2018disgusting\u2019 and \u2018ruined\u2019 and that nobody would ever be attracted to me as long as they were on my body, so I believed there was no going back and no point in having them anymore,\u201d Cole said.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the physical risks, binding also has profound psychological effects, said Meg Meeker, a pediatrician and best-selling parenting author.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEncouraging children to change or hide parts of their bodies induces shame,\u201d Meeker told The Daily Wire.\u00a0\u201cWould we ever have overweight children with body dysphoria wear tight girdles to see what being thinner is like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meeker said that encouraging questioning children to hide their body parts also causes \u201cmental confusion\u201d because it teaches them to \u201cwrongly believe that\u00a0becoming another gender will actually assuage the deep feelings of dysphoria they feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also causes confusion for the non-questioning child, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen an adult tells them that a boy can be a girl or a girl a boy, they become confused and feel as though the realities they see are not in line with the realities of teachers and other adults. Then they conclude that they do not have the ability to adequately\u00a0assess what they see. This causes them to doubt their thinking for years to come,\u201d Meeker said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy belief as a pediatrician of 35 years is that the feelings of dysphoria aren\u2019t about gender at all \u2014 they are deeper signs of depression, grief, insecurity and more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, about 150,000 teens ages 13 to 17 identified as transgender in the U.S., about 0.7% of that age group, <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/142\/4\/e20182162\/37381\/Ensuring-Comprehensive-Care-and-Support-for\">according<\/a> to the American Academy of Pediatrics.\u00a0Now, that number has doubled to 300,000 teens or 1.4%, according to a June <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/publications\/trans-adults-united-states\/\">study<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.
