Although Musk said he purchased the company to encourage free expression and combat political polarization, Murphy called for the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to examine Saudi Arabia\u2019s potential role as new ownership changes the website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I am requesting the Committee on Foreign Investment \u2014 which reviews acquisitions of U.S. businesses by foreign buyers \u2014 to conduct an investigation into the national security implications of Saudi Arabia\u2019s purchase of Twitter,\u201d the lawmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/1587091081920929796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on social media. \u201cWe should be concerned that the Saudis, who have a clear interest in repressing political speech and impacting U.S. politics, are now the second-largest owner of a major social media platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murphy noted that both TikTok and Twitter, two of the most prominent American social media platforms, would be owned \u201cin whole or in part\u201d by China and Saudi Arabia. \u201cThere is a clear national security issue at stake and CFIUS should do a review,\u201d he continued. \u201cThis is a dangerous trend, and we don\u2019t have to accept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, maintains a 16.9% stake in Kingdom Holding Company.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal comes as leftists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-outlines-new-content-moderation-strategy\">voice distrust<\/a> for Musk and his leadership of the social media platform. The world\u2019s richest man <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-elon-musk-proposes-twitter-buyout-at-54-20-per-share-trading-halted-as-stock-price-soars\">revived<\/a> efforts to purchase Twitter earlier this month after fighting the company in court over his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-purge-is-coming-twitter-explodes-after-elon-musk-tanks-44-billion-deal\">attempt to cancel<\/a> a previous offer, a move he said was driven by concerns that executives were underestimating the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/heres-the-latest-in-the-elon-musk-twitter-legal-feud\">fake accounts<\/a> on the platform. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-elon-musk-officially-takes-over-twitter-as-sale-is-now-final-top-execs-fired-report-says\">immediately fired<\/a> CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and legal affairs and policy chief Vijaya Gadde, who had a role in removing former President Donald Trump from the platform and suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story days before the election of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence,\u201d Musk explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/read-it-elon-musk-explains-why-he-bought-twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> last week. \u201cThere is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murphy\u2019s calls for an investigation also occur amid poor relations between Saudi Arabia and members of the Democratic Party.
