National newspaper of record <em>O Globo<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/oglobo.globo.com\/politica\/eleicoes-2022\/noticia\/2022\/10\/disputa-entre-lula-e-bolsonaro-e-a-mais-apertada-para-presidente-desde-1989.ghtml\">described<\/a> the results as the closest election since 1989, when Lula narrowly lost to Fernando Collor de Mello, who was impeached and ousted from office over corruption allegations in 1992. (NELSON ALMEIDA\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/infograficos.oglobo.globo.com\/politica\/eleicoes-2022\/apuracao-2022-em-tempo-real-consulte-resultado.html#\/presidente?turno=2\">99 percent<\/a> of votes counted, Lula received 50.9 percent of the vote, or about 60.3 million votes. Bolsonaro received 49.1 percent, or 58.2 million votes. The top election authority the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), counted 20.58 percent (32.2 million votes) were \u201cabstentions,\u201d meaning the voter did not choose a candidate at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">Lula\u2019s high turnout in the northeast \u2013 the country\u2019s poorest region and his traditional stronghold, made it possible to defeat Bolsonaro despite the conservative triumphing in the nation\u2019s largest metropolises of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Bolsonaro enjoyed his highest support in the Venezuelan border region of Roraima, now heavily populated with socialist refugees, and in the inland state of Rondonia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>While the number of abstentions was far higher than the number of votes dividing the two candidates, the percentage of voters who opted to choose neither candidate dropped slightly from 20.95 percent in the first round, which pitted Lula and Bolsonaro against a larger slate of candidates, to 20.56 percent, an <a href=\"https:\/\/jovempan.com.br\/noticias\/politica\/eleicoes-2022\/moraes-celebra-queda-no-numero-de-abstencoes-maior-numero-de-votos-da-historia.html\">unprecedented<\/a> result in Brazilian history suggesting the candidates managed to move undecided voters off of the sidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Bolsonaro has yet to comment publicly; <a href=\"https:\/\/oglobo.globo.com\/blogs\/lauro-jardim\/post\/2022\/10\/bolsonaro-se-isola-e-nao-quer-visitas.ghtml\">rumors<\/a> in major Brazilian newspapers claim that he is rejecting requests to visit or speak with him. Brazilian news network Jovem Pan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JovemPanNews\/status\/1586893276187004931\">reported<\/a> that sources within Brazil\u2019s presidential palace \u201cdid not have an expectation\u201d that Bolsonaro would speak on Sunday. (ANDRE BORGES\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Lula delivered an <a href=\"https:\/\/oglobo.globo.com\/politica\/eleicoes-2022\/noticia\/2022\/10\/nao-enfrentamos-um-adversario-mas-a-maquina-do-estado-diz-lula-em-seu-primeiro-pronunciamento.ghtml\">address<\/a> in which he accused his opponents of trying to \u201cbury [him] alive\u201d but emphasized unity moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we are telling the world that Brazil is back,\u201d Lula told a crowd of supporters on Sunday night. \u201cThat Brazil is too great to be relegated to that sad role of global pariah. \u2026 it is necessary to reconstruct the very soul of this country. To recover generosity, solidarity, respect for differences and love for one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">Lula\u2019s victory is particularly momentous given that, during the last round of elections, which Bolsonaro won, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2018\/04\/09\/chaos-in-brazilian-socialist-party-as-lula-begins-prison-sentence\/\">in prison<\/a> after being found guilty of buying a luxury beachfront property with bribe money. The case was part of a much larger corruption investigation that came to be known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2017-06-08\/no-one-has-ever-made-a-corruption-machine-like-this-one#:~:text=Marcelo%20Odebrecht%20was%20convicted%20of,four%20years%20under%20house%20arrest.\">Operation Car Wash<\/a>,\u201d which unveiled a nationwide corruption scheme involving dozens of high-ranking politicians that operated during Lula\u2019s presidential tenure. The government enriched itself by offering overpriced contracts for infrastructure and other public works projects to private contractors, most notably the now-defunct firm Odebrecht, and those private contractors would then use some of the excess money to bribe the politicians, securing future contracts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Last year, the nation\u2019s top court, the Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF), let the now president-elect run for office again by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2021\/03\/09\/brazil-supreme-court-lets-convicted-criminal-ex-president-run-office-again\/\">overturning<\/a> his condition on the grounds that the judge initially in charge of the case, Sergio Moro, was personally biased against Lula and originally did not have jurisdiction to try the case. De Moraes led the TSE to heavily censor opinions throughout the second round of campaigning, most prominently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2022\/10\/21\/brazil-election-authority-blocks-bolsonaro-journalists-from-calling-leftist-lula-corrupt\/\">banning<\/a> the Bolsonaro campaign from calling Lula \u201ccorrupt\u201d or a \u201cthief\u201d on the grounds that the STF had overturned his conviction on multiple appeals. Jovem Pan complained last week that De Moraes had essentially banned the network from mentioning Lula\u2019s corruption conviction in any capacity at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">In contrast, while the TSE moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2022\/10\/28\/brazil-bolsonaro-lula-reach-end-of-worlds-dirtiest-election-after-cannibalism-pedophilia-attacks\/\">censor<\/a> left-wing attempts to smear Bolsonaro as a cannibal, Lula openly accused Bolsonaro of \u201cpedophile behavior\u201d on\u00a0<em>Flow<\/em>, one of Brazil\u2019s most popular podcasts, during the second round of campaigning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis chapter will end with the victory of democracy, society, and of the voters,\u201d de Moraes said in remarks following the election. \u201cThere does not exist any country in the world, not even in the smaller democracies, that publishes results in less than four hours with security, efficiency, and competence.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"pt\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/JPElei%C3%A7%C3%B5es?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#JPElei\u00e7\u00f5es<\/a> | Alexandre de Moraes: &#8220;Essa etapa se encerra com a vit\u00f3ria da democracia, da sociedade e dos eleitores. Biden, as a candidate in 2020,\u00a0had vowed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2020\/09\/30\/joe-biden-struggling-latino-vote-threatens-tank-brazils-economic-debate\/\">destroy<\/a> the Brazilian economy as a presidential candidate if Bolsonaro did not accept an unspecified $20-billion environmental investment, prompting Bolsonaro to later threaten to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2020\/11\/11\/bolsonaro-hints-at-war-with-u-s-brazil-under-biden-we-have-the-gunpowder\/\">go to war<\/a> with the United States.
