Here she is talking about it with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GayleKing?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GayleKing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5HvpNSUIYb\">https:\/\/t.co\/5HvpNSUIYb<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/147x6d807W\">pic.twitter.com\/147x6d807W<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Zara Rahim (@ZaraRahim) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZaraRahim\/status\/1586040491644444672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s start with the day you were born,\u201d King said, asking, \u201cWho paid for the hospital bill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, her research is very good,\u201d Roberts said, flashing a smile and prompting King to interrupt: \u201cWe\u2019re professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is \u2026 ah, the King family paid for my hospital bill,\u201d Roberts continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot my family,\u201d King laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot your family \u2014\u201d Roberts agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Luther King Jr. \u2014\u201d King prompted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Coretta,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did that come about?\u201d King asked, turning to the audience and adding, \u201cDid you guys know that about Julia Roberts? \u2026 That\u2019s what I said! Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King \u2026 why did they do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously because my parents couldn\u2019t pay for the hospital bill,\u201d Roberts began, adding, \u201cMy parents had a theater school in Atlanta called The Actors and Writers Workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne day Coretta Scott King called my mother and asked if her kids could be part of the school because they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept her kids,\u201d Roberts said, noting that at the time, segregation made it difficult for black students to find theater schools that would accept them \u2014 especially if there were also white students at the same school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom was like, \u2018Sure, come on over,&#8217;\u201d Roberts continued. \u201cAnd so they just all became friends, and they helped us out of a jam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, because in the 60s you didn\u2019t have little black children interacting with little white kids in acting school and your parents were like, \u2018Come on in,&#8217;\u201d King replied. \u201cI think that\u2019s extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roberts, who just celebrated her 55th birthday on Friday, has recently been out promoting her latest film alongside actor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/george-clooney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Clooney<\/a>: \u201cTicket to Paradise.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Actress Julia Roberts revealed in a recent interview that Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. had paid her mother\u2019s hospital bill after she was born.
