Yesterday the <em>NY Times<\/em> confirmed that Democrats really are frantic to keep Hochul <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/27\/nyregion\/hochul-governor-zeldin-democratic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from sinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>With just 12 days until Election Day, Democrats and their allies are mounting a frenzied push to keep Ms. Hochul in office, pouring millions of dollars into last-minute ads and staging a whirlwind of campaign rallies to energize their base amid concerns that their typically reliable bedrock of Black and Latino voters\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/10\/25\/democrats-black-voter-turnout-00063254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">might not turn out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Labor unions have gone into overdrive, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on television and radio ads to cajole those voters to turn up for Ms. Hochul. On the ground, Ms. Hochul is expected to campaign with Representative Hakeem Jeffries, a party power broker whose Brooklyn district provides crucial votes for the Democratic base, as well as in southeast Queens with Mayor Eric Adams over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The Hochul campaign has even turned to its former adversaries for help, including progressive lawmakers who opposed her during the Democratic primary in June, and the left-leaning Working Families Party, which called for an \u201cemergency all-hands-on-deck meeting\u201d of its leadership earlier this week to mobilize in favor of Ms. Hochul\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that some of us have deep policy disagreements with Kathy Hochul \u2014 that\u2019s why we endorsed Jumaane in the primary \u2014 but a Zeldin administration would be entirely destructive to our agenda,\u201d Sochie Nnaemeka, the [WFP] party\u2019s director in New York, wrote in the email, which was obtained by The New York Times.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The strategy is pretty simple. Run up the far left vote in New York City to offset Zeldin\u2019s strength upstate. Getting particular attention right now are black voters and Hispanic voters. A union for hotel workers just announced it will spend $250,000 running ads in Spanish: \u201cA voice-over in Spanish tells viewers that Ms. Hochul, who is white and of Irish descent, is \u2018one of us.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, sure she is. Just don\u2019t expect her to clean any hotel rooms. Hochul will also be attending events at black churches with NY AG Letitia James. They are also bringing in the big guns including Hillary Clinton as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandstateny.com\/politics\/2022\/10\/hillary-clinton-be-special-guest-hochul-rally\/379002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surprise guest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Hochul is planning a get out the vote \u201cWomen\u2019s Rally\u201d at the women\u2019s college Barnard in Upper Manhattan 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3. A flier reviewed by City &#038; State promotes appearances from Democratic heavyweights including Attorney General Letitia James, Rep. Nydia Vel\u00e1zquez and state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. Clinton was left off the ad, but City &#038; State has learned that the former Secretary of State is expected to be a surprise guest.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But despite all this last minute activity, Politico reports people inside and outside the campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/10\/27\/democrats-anxious-about-new-york-city-00063903\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are worried<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026less than two weeks before Election Day \u2014 and just two days before early voting begins \u2014 Hochul has a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Street corner volunteers and direct mail are lacking in high-turnout neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Manhattan, despite $30.5 million in statewide ad buys. Many of the city\u2019s most prominent Democratic politicians are missing from the campaign trail. And inside her operation, staffers and supporters are growing concerned that she has not made deep enough inroads with consistent Democratic voters, according to interviews with eight people involved in or closely supporting Hochul\u2019s campaign\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text__paragraph\" data-content-child-index=\"0-3\">\u2026some of Hochul\u2019s own staff and allies are privately expressing frustration with what they describe as a well-funded campaign focused too much on TV ads at the expense of building relationships with New York City community leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text__paragraph\" data-content-child-index=\"0-4\">The aides and surrogates \u2014 who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss Hochul\u2019s strategy \u2014 questioned why she is so focused on the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn<i>\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/i>\u00a0when crime\u00a0<a class=\"js-tealium-tracking\" href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tracking=\"mpos=&#038;mid=&#038;lindex=&#038;lcol=\" aria-label=\"consistently ranks as a top issue for city voters (opens in a new window)\"><u>consistently ranks as a top issue for city voters<\/u><\/a>. Zeldin, a Long Island congressman, has made crime his top campaign issue,\u00a0<a class=\"js-tealium-tracking\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/10\/22\/hochul-zeldin-midterm-crime-inflation-00062843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tracking=\"mpos=&#038;mid=&#038;lindex=&#038;lcol=\" aria-label=\"and polls suggest the strategy is working (opens in a new window)\"><u>and polls suggest the strategy is working<\/u><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 putting him within striking distance of the governor in a race long thought to be a sleeper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text__paragraph\" data-content-child-index=\"0-5\">\u201cThere is massive frustration. People are complaining they don\u2019t have any [literature]. Where are the posters?\u201d one aide said in an interview. \u201cI think it\u2019s going to be a depressed turnout because there\u2019s no excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-content-child-index=\"0-5\">Honestly, it\u2019s still hard for me to believe this could happen, but the fact that so many Democrats are in a last minute frenzy tells me they are genuinely worried it might.
