The investigations found that Hamlett had been setting up meetings between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">congressional<\/a> offices and the Chinese embassy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongressman Beyer was totally unaware of these activities prior to being contacted by the House Sergeant At Arms,\u201d Aaron Fritschner, Beyer\u2019s deputy chief of staff, told National Review on Friday. \u201cAs soon as he learned of them, he followed every directive he was given by security officials. The staffer in question is no longer employed by the office of Congressman Beyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Fritschner, Beyer was \u201cdeeply upset\u201d about the revelations and that the congressman remained resolute in his goal to protect the U.S. from threats from China. Beyer \u201chas been an outspoken critic of China\u2019s record on human rights \u2014 including their<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/LucQ4\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDonBeyer\/status\/1278052438445043713\"> crackdown<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/LucQ4\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDonBeyer\/status\/1293350739524239360\"> Hong Kong<\/a> and their <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/LucQ4\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDonBeyer\/status\/1202016744841318400\">oppression<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/LucQ4\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDonBeyer\/status\/1199018158364880896\">Muslim<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/LucQ4\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDonBeyer\/status\/1265796141137965057\">Uyghur population<\/a> in Xinjiang \u2014 as well as an advocate for<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/LucQ4\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDonBeyer\/status\/618148788218281984\"> Tibet<\/a>, and a vocal supporter of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/LucQ4\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/MOFA_Taiwan\/status\/1558782302636756992\">Taiwan<\/a>,\u201d Fritschner said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyer, whose office said he had not an \u201cinkling\u201d that his staffer was allegedly working with the Chinese embassy, was told on Tuesday by the House sergeant at arms that Hamlett had set up meetings between people at the embassy and other congressional offices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>National Review was provided with one of the emails which had been sent to a congressional office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have worked on The Hill for nearly 34 yrs. and worked 5 of those years as Deputy Scheduler to the late Senator Arlen Specter,\u201d one email from Hamlett said. \u201cI would like to introduce you to some friends of mine that work at the Chinese Embassy who would like to meet you and have a chat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigation by Beyer\u2019s office confirmed the meetings, which Hamlett had tried to set up with at least two Republican offices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One congressional staffer who spoke with National Review said that he attended one of the meetings and was pressed about a \u201cbill\u201d backed by his boss that the person from the embassy disapproved of while Hamlett sat at another table.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hamlett has spent nearly 40 years working in various congressional staff positions.\u00a0 <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A staffer for Rep.
