This statement is simultaneously true: we will stay safe unless we foolishly, recklessly stumble into a direct confrontation with Russia by joining the war on Ukraine\u2019s side.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Given the Administration\u2019s frequent claims that the president has no intention of engaging in a war with Russia, one could be forgiven not knowing there was any chance of the U.S. getting sucked into the war with Russia. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/04\/28\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-request-to-congress-for-additional-funding-to-support-ukraine\/\"><span>Biden reiterated<\/span><\/a><span> in April that the United States would not \u201c<\/span><span>not send U.S. troops to fight Russian troops in Ukraine.\u201d He has not publicly changed from that stance since. Yet the deployments and dispositions of U.S. military in the past week casts doubt on the president\u2019s assurances.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>In just the past few days, the United States Army deployed a brigade of the famed 101<\/span><span>st<\/span><span> Airborne Division to Romania \u2013 the first time the division has been in Europe in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ukraine-news-russia-us-army-101st-airborne-nato-war-games-romania\/\"><span>almost 80 years<\/span><\/a><span>. The U.S.-led NATO alliance just held a major <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/10\/why-are-nato-and-russia-both-now-training-for-nuclear-war\/\"><span>nuclear weapons exercise<\/span><\/a><span>, and in the Adriatic Sea near Ukraine, the aircraft carrier U.S.S. George H.W. Bush is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mc.nato.int\/media-centre\/news\/2022\/nato-ships-integrate-with-uss-george-h-w-bush-carrier-strike-group-for-secretary-general-visit-\"><span>conducting exercises<\/span><\/a><span> with NATO allies. While exercises are a normal and routine part of America\u2019s national defense, these included ominous offensive allusions.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Brig. Gen. John Lubas, deputy commander of the 101<\/span><span>st<\/span><span> Airborne Division in Romania, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/courage-strength-optimism\/us-military-forces-prepared-cross-into-ukraine\"><span>said the unit<\/span><\/a><span> was <\/span><i><span>not<\/span><\/i><span> there for a training event, but a \u201ccombat deployment,\u201d adding that his troops \u201c<\/span><span>need to be ready to fight tonight, depending on how the situation escalates across the border\u201d in Ukraine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a Newsweek article this week titled, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/american-troops-prepared-engage-war-russia-1754893\"><i><span>American Troops Prepared to Engage in War with Russia<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who was aboard the aircraft carrier, said the operation in the Adriatic \u201c<\/span><span>demonstrates our ability to rapidly reinforce our allies and project power across the alliance.\u201d Since last February, the United States deployed thousands of troops to Europe, bringing the total <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/3078056\/fact-sheet-us-defense-contributions-to-europe\/#:~:text=Since%20February%202022%2C%20DoD%20deployed,100%2C000%20service%20members%20across%20Europe.\"><span>number to 100,000<\/span><\/a><span>, many of which have been forward deployed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/topics_136388.htm\"><span>to Eastern European<\/span><\/a><span> NATO states.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>What no one in Washington or Brussels has bothered to explain to the American people, however, is: why? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What is the threat to American national security that would necessitate the deployment of 100,000 U.S. troops, forward-deploy a combat division that hasn\u2019t been in Europe since World War II, and send aircraft carrier battle groups up to the Ukraine border, all of which are expressly and publicly intended to prepare for war with Russia?\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Thus far, the non-thinking answer has been to constantly repeat that Russia launched \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/05\/08\/g7-leaders-statement-2\/\"><span>an unprovoked<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d war against Ukraine, with the implication being, that if not checked now, Putin may soon launch further attacks into eastern Europe and conquer more territory. So many of America\u2019s current leaders were raised in the heart of the Cold War and learned from their youth to fear and even hate the Russian-dominated USSR. But Putin\u2019s Russia of today is not a fraction of the genuine combat power once wielded by the Kremlin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It is ironic that many experts claim Russia is a serious threat to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/01\/ukraine-neighbours-nato-lithuania-poland-slovakia-latvia-estonia-romania\"><span>attack NATO territory<\/span><\/a><span>, while others claim the Russian military will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/putin-and-the-possibility-of-defeat-in-ukraine\/2022\/09\/12\/c62550d0-3281-11ed-a0d6-415299bfebd5_story.html\"><span>not be able<\/span><\/a><span> to defeat even Ukraine. It can\u2019t simultaneously be that Russia is a regional menace that is a threat to roll through NATO countries, yet also so weak that Ukraine is going to defeat them. The reality is evident for anyone willing to see it: the Russian military did not have the capacity to successfully capture even neighboring NATO states (prior to this war, it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RR1253.html\"><span>widely assumed<\/span><\/a><span> NATO would be powerless to prevent a Russian victory over the Baltics) and owing to the tremendous equipment losses over the past eight months, it would take decades of time to rebuild even to their pre-war level.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Yet as I have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/10\/russias-future-a-win-in-ukraine-a-revolution-against-putin-or-nuclear-war\/\"><span>frequently argued<\/span><\/a><span>, if Russia mobilizes a large portion of its armed force and its defense industrial capacity, in time it will likely overcome the Ukrainian defenses \u2013 though even that minor objective is by no means a guarantee. The idea, however, that Russia has the slightest conventional capacity to invade any other country is laughable. They don\u2019t. Period. Full stop. There is nowhere near the necessary military means to invade even one bordering state, much less take on the 30-member military alliance of NATO.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Yet that has not stopped many in the United States from fanning the flames of fear on the idea that Russia is a danger to the U.S. and must be militarily confronted. Former general and CIA Director David Petraeus has suggested the U.S. troops do more than simply exercise near the Ukrainian border. In a recent interview with the French weekly L\u2019Express, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexpress.fr\/actualite\/idees-et-debats\/david-petraeus-ex-cia-une-force-dirigee-par-les-etats-unis-pourrait-intervenir-en-ukraine_2182249.html\"><span>Petraeus suggested<\/span><\/a><span> the United States might intervene in Ukraine with a multi-national \u2018coalition of the willing\u2019 type arrangement and potentially fight the Russians there.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier this month, in response to a hypothetical Russian use of a tactical nuclear weapon on Ukrainian soil, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/oct\/02\/us-russia-putin-ukraine-war-david-petraeus\"><span>Petraeus argued<\/span><\/a><span> the United States should \u201c<\/span><span>take out every Russian conventional force that we can see and identify on the battlefield in Ukraine\u2026\u00a0and every ship in the Black Sea.\u201d The former general seems oblivious to the reality that if the U.S. directly attacked Russian military forces, they would respond in kind immediately, potentially targeting American troops in Europe or Syria \u2013 sending the risk of a full-on war between the world\u2019s two largest nuclear superpowers through the roof.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>It should be an article of faith that the United States Government and our Armed Forces have the primary obligation to defend our country, meet our treaty obligations, and preserve the ability of our citizens to prosper. Kevin Kim\/ Released)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>As I stated at the opening, let me reiterate once more: <\/span><i><span>there is nothing at stake in the war between the bordering states of Russia and Ukraine that threatens our national security<\/span><\/i><span> (or that of our NATO alliance). Russia has exposed a near total incapacity to conventionally threaten any NATO member, so America\u2019s primary objective should be to contain the spread of the war to its current boundaries, promote a diplomatic end to the fighting on the best terms for Ukraine possible, and maintain our strong conventional and nuclear deterrent to guarantee our own security and continued prosperity.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>What we should <\/span><i><span>never<\/span><\/i><span> do, however, is foolishly court actions that would expand the war, draw us into an unnecessary fight, and put at risk our very existence as a nation. It\u2019s shocking such obvious truths need to be written, yet that is the reality of this situation. Too many of our leaders and so-called experts are aggressively pushing us closer and closer to war with Russia \u2013 that could all too easily go nuclear \u2013 and doing virtually nothing to end the fighting.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><i><span>Now a 1945 Contributing Editor,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensepriorities.org\/media\/profile\/daniel-davis\"><i><span>Daniel L.
