He said it is \u201cpretty abysmal,\u201d \u201cdisgraceful,\u201d and \u201creally dangerous for our future as a united, democratic country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe depend on freedom of speech,\u201d Alito said. \u201cColleges and universities should be setting the example, and law schools should be setting the example for the university because our adversary system is based on the principle that the best way to get at the truth is to have a strong presentation of opposing views. So, law schools should be free to speak their minds without worrying about the consequences, and they should have their ideas tested in rational debating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He pointed to different reports about law school campuses, as well as discussions he has held with students, where free speech has been an issue but was not specific about which schools to which he was referring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Alito <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/us-supreme-courts-alito-calls-law-school-free-speech-abysmal-2022-10-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> \u201cbased on what I have read and what has been told to me by students,\u201d some law schools are \u201creally not carrying out their responsibility\u201d to safeguard the speech of students and \u201chave their ideas tested in rational debating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Alito went on to discuss his beliefs about different types of speech when asked about \u201cprotected and unprotected speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WzRqIcXPmKw&#038;t=2820s&#038;ab_channel=TheHeritageFoundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the Justices he has disagreed with in the past generally agree with him about the importance of free speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe real test, as Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote, is whether we\u2019re willing to protect the speech that we hate,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAny speech involving public interests, involving politics, government, history, economics, law, science, religion, philosophy, the arts \u2014 anything of that level of importance \u2014 the general rule has to be the government has to stay out,\u201d he said, adding that the First Amendment doesn\u2019t safeguard \u201cthe right of anybody to say anything they want\u201d whenever they feel like it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/justice-alito-says-leaked-draft-opinion-overruling-roe-v-wade-made-majority-targets-for-assassination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, Alito also said that the leaked draft majority opinion to get rid of Roe v. Wade risked the lives of some of the Justices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe leak also made those of us who were thought to be in the majority in support of overruling Roe and Casey targets for assassination because it gave people a rational reason to think they could prevent that from happening by killing one of us,\u201d Alito said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last month, U.S. Circuit Judge James Ho said that judges shouldn\u2019t hire Yale law students due to the \u201ccancel culture\u201d at the school. He discussed an incident that happened in March when Yale students interrupted a discussion with an attorney who defended a Colorado baker who wouldn\u2019t bake a cake for a homosexual wedding.
