The group\u2019s Oct. 21 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/press-releases\/facebook-and-tiktok-fail-block-deceptive-ads-blatant-us-midterms-disinformation\/\">press release<\/a> on its report, headlined \u201cFacebook and TikTok fail to block deceptive ads with blatant US midterms disinformation,\u201d claimed its \u201cexperiment\u201d was engineered to \u201cdetermine how well social media platforms are living up to their promises to stop disinformation that can destabilise democratic processes.\u201d Soros\u2019 Open Society Foundations gave Global Witness <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensocietyfoundations.org\/grants\/past?filter_keyword=Global+Witness&#038;grant_id=OR2020-72498\">$17,657,000<\/a> between 2016 and 2020 alone.\u00a0The group has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/about-us\/contact-us\/\">offices<\/a> in London, Brussels and Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p>The group complained that TikTok \u201capproved 90 percent of ads featuring misleading and false election disinformation\u201d while Facebook allegedly \u201capproved a significant number of similarly inaccurate and false ads.\u201d Global Witness Senior Advisor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jon-lloyd-98288b10b\/?originalSubdomain=uk\">John Lloyd<\/a> tried to drum up fear about a supposed threat to \u201cdemocracy\u201d if Big Tech companies didn\u2019t up the ante on their censorship operations:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It is high time they got their houses in order and started properly resourcing the detection and prevention of disinformation, before it\u2019s too late. Our democracy rests on their willingness to act.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Multiple media outlets like <em>The New York Times<\/em> and <em>The Hill<\/em> gobbled up and regurgitated Global Witness\u2019 talking points without mentioning the group\u2019s financial ties to Soros:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/21\/technology\/tiktok-youtube-facebook-misinformation-ads.html\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>:<em> <\/em>\u201cTikTok failed to stop most misleading political ads in a test run by researchers.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/3697761-tiktok-facebook-failed-to-remove-ads-spreading-election-misinformation-report\/\"><em>The Hill<\/em>:<\/a> \u201cTikTok, Facebook failed to remove ads spreading election misinformation: report.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/10\/21\/tiktok-worst-at-catching-ads-spreading-misinformation-on-us-midterms-global-witness-report-finds\/\"><em>Fortune<\/em><\/a>:<em> \u201c<\/em>TikTok let through 90% of ads spreading baseless claims around U.S. midterms, new report finds.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-business-government-and-politics-misinformation-a18a35a2a2542eadfc3893983a818511\">Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cReport: TikTok bad at culling US election misinformation ads.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/oct\/24\/tiktok-election-misinformation-voting-politics\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>: \u201c\u2018We risk another crisis\u2019: TikTok in danger of being major vector of election misinformation.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Global Witness, however, praised YouTube for its obsession with censoring election content while still finding room to suggest it doesn\u2019t go far enough in censoring election content in Brazil. Could that be because Brazilian president <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jairbolsonaro\">Jair Bolsonaro<\/a> is an ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump? Bolsonaro is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/24\/world\/americas\/brazil-election-polls-criminalization.html\">currently<\/a> in the middle of a highly contested election against leftist and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/why-did-global-media-give-brazils-lula-free-pass-corruption\">disgraced<\/a> former Brazilian President <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LulaOficial\">Luiz In\u00e1cio \u201cLula\u201d Da Silva<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly YouTube succeeded both in detecting the ads and suspending the channel carrying them, though this is in glaring contrast to the platform&#8217;s record in Brazil, where similar ads were approved,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/campaigns\/digital-threats\/tiktok-and-facebook-fail-detect-election-disinformation-us-while-youtube-succeeds\/\">Global Witness<\/a> and C4D <a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurityfordemocracy.org\/tiktok-and-facebook-fail-to-detect-election-disinformation\">wrote<\/a> in the report.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube, in particular, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/free-speech\/brian-bradley\/2022\/09\/29\/update-free-elections-google-owned-youtube-cancels\">certainly seems<\/a> to be taking its cues from Soros-funded groups. The Soros-funded Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights (LCCHR) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/business\/joseph-vazquez\/2022\/10\/14\/breaking-soros-gave-30m-groups-urging-censorship-so-called\">spearheaded<\/a> an Oct. 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/civilrights.org\/resource\/leadership-conference-and-democracy-groups-urge-social-media-platforms-to-address-voter-disinformation-ahead-of-midterms\/#\">open letter<\/a> signed by 11 other liberal groups pining for Big Tech companies like YouTube to \u201c[t]ake immediate steps to curb the spread of voting disinformation in the midterms and future elections and to help prevent the undermining of our democracy.\u201d LCCHR, in addition to six of the 12 signatories, were funded to the tune of $30,325,500 by Soros between 2016 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not all.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/free-speech\/joseph-vazquez\/2022\/01\/18\/liberal-funded-global-fact-checking-network-decries\">Soros-funded<\/a> International Fact-Checking Network at the liberal Poynter Institute for Media Studies also put election pressure on YouTube. The IFCN published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/fact-checking\/2022\/an-open-letter-to-youtubes-ceo-from-the-worlds-fact-checkers\/\">open letter<\/a> Jan. 12 to YouTube demanding it silence free speech on issues such as elections and COVID-19. \u201cThe whole world witnessed the consequences of disinformation when a violent mob assaulted the U.S. Capitol last year. From the eve of the U.S. presidential election to the day after, YouTube videos supporting the \u2018fraud\u2019 narrative were watched more than 33 million times,\u201d the letter whined.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Conservatives are under attack.<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><em>Contact your representatives and demand that Big Tech be held to account to mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency and equal footing for conservatives.
