And blood pressure medications that contain hydrochlorothiazide have been linked to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/hydrochlorothiazide-oral-route\/description\/drg-20071841\" target=\"_blank\">a higher risk of skin cancer<\/a>, reports the Mayo Clinic. &#8220;Researchers speculate this happens because hydrochlorothiazide makes the skin more sensitive to the sun,&#8221; says Sherpa. &#8220;Aside from the main components of the drug, Zantac also has impurities, like NDMA [a potentially carcinogenic, nitrosamine impurity] that heighten your risk of developing cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are available in both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) form. According to MedlinePlus, they are used to treat <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000381.htm\" target=\"_blank\">various gastrointestinal problems<\/a> such as acid reflux<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/h-pylori-infection-stomach-cancer-news\/\" target=\"_blank\"> or stomach ulcers<\/a>; some commonly known PPIs include Prevacid and Prilosec. &#8220;Because PPIs such as omeprazole are potent gastric acid suppressants [they] may increase <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/medical-answers\/omeprazole-cancer-3565253\/\" target=\"_blank\">the risk of gastric cancer<\/a> by causing atrophy (thinning) of the stomach lining, elevating levels of a hormone called gastrin, and an overgrowth of bacteria in the stomach,&#8221; according to Drugs.com.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Several studies have shown an association between <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2022\/0700\/poems-proton-pump-inhibitors-gastric-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\">PPI use and gastric cancer<\/a>,&#8221; <strong>Mark H. Ebell<\/strong>, MD, MS wrote in an article published by <em>American Family Physician<\/em>.
