Josh Hawley is \u201cactually inside the GOP.\u201d Rubin said, \u201cFar from displaying the masculine virtues they imagine are endangered, Republicans have become the party of fearful men afraid to stand on principle.\u201d She went on to cite David French, the senior editor of The Dispatch, and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney as exemplars of real conservative courage for their willingness to stand up to toxic masculinity within the GOP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Putting aside the risible claim that people like French and Cheney represent the faithful remnant of true conservatism, Rubin\u2019s op-ed, like so many commentaries offered by leftists, fails on multiple fronts. It fails because it does not understand the severity of the crisis facing males in 2022. It fails because what it offers as solutions to the very real masculinity crisis represents what only insulated bureaucratic elites are capable of conjuring up to address the problems of everyday people. And ultimately, it fails on anthropological grounds because it does not understand men\u2019s biological, psychological, sociological, and teleological character.<\/p>\n<p> Our Masculinity Crisis <\/p>\n<p>Although liberals seem to view masculine suffering as more of a joke, if not justified, retribution for having to live under \u201cthe patriarchy,\u201d America is witnessing unprecedented problems for its men. As Hawley said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawley.senate.gov\/senator-hawley-delivers-national-conservatism-keynote-lefts-attack-men-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speech last year<\/a>, \u201cAmerican men are working less, they are getting married in fewer numbers, they\u2019re fathering fewer children, they\u2019re suffering more anxiety and depression, they\u2019re engaging in more substance abuse.\u201d The percentage of men pursuing degrees in higher education is precipitously declining. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/up-front\/2021\/10\/08\/the-male-college-crisis-is-not-just-in-enrollment-but-completion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study released by the Brookings Institution<\/a> earlier this year, only 41 percent of students currently enrolled in college are men. That decrease, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/elizabethbradley\/2022\/02\/03\/men-in-college-another-casualty-of-the-covid-19-pandemic\/#:~:text=The%20pattern%20of%20the%20enrollment,widened%20substantially%20during%20the%20pandemic.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has been going on for years<\/a>, seems likely to continue. The percentage of men graduating from college is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/up-front\/2021\/10\/08\/the-male-college-crisis-is-not-just-in-enrollment-but-completion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also declining<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This problem goes far beyond education. Lifetime earnings for men <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2021\/05\/26\/declining-wages-us-men-male\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are also declining<\/a>, a trend that has been going on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/wrong-route-equality-mens-declining-wages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for more than a decade<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-19-life-expectancy-american-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As of last year<\/a>, men\u2019s life expectancy had dropped by two years. Their testosterone levels <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/declining-testosterone-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have been faltering for decades<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/health-statistics\/overweight-obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Almost a third<\/a> of men are overweight, which puts them at risk for several health complications.<\/p>\n<p>Male suffering unsurprisingly contributes to the overall suffering of America writ large. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/health-statistics\/overweight-obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Significant percentages<\/a> of the American population grow up in fatherless homes, putting children at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatherhood.org\/father-absence-statistic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased risk<\/a> of poverty, behavioral problems, health issues, and truancy. Children who grow up without a father are more likely to suffer abuse and neglect, commit crimes, wind up in prison, or become pregnant as a teenager. In other words, America\u2019s male crisis is a societal crisis.<\/p>\n<p> Elites\u2019 Indifference <\/p>\n<p>These problems are not unknown to liberal elites. Yet their solutions, rather than reflecting an appreciation for the threat the masculinity crisis presents, or even demonstrating empathy, more often prioritize partisan point-scoring while invoking condescension and indifference.
