Wade<\/em> decision put some justices\u2019 lives in danger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leak also made those of us who were thought to be in the majority in support of overruling Roe and Casey targets for assassination because it gave people a rational reason to think they could prevent that from happening by killing one of us,\u201d Alito told the Heritage Foundation\u2019s John G. Malcolm, who asked the justice how the leak affected the court.<\/p>\n<p>On May 2 of this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473\">POLITICO<\/a> published the draft from <em>Dobbs v Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em> from an unidentified source.<\/p>\n<p>Almost two months later, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the monumental <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> case that legalized abortion across America.<\/p>\n<p>Alito wrote that Roe and a subsequent case, <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em>, which upheld Roe must be overturned, and the right to allow, deny, or restrict the right to an abortion must reside with states.<\/p>\n<p>The 6-3 decision in <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em> followed the early May leak of the draft opinion indicating which way the justices would rule. That leak prompted nationwide protests, particularly in Washington, D.C., and dozens of acts of vandalism were reported at pro-life organizations, centers, and churches, which probed Chief Justice John Roberts to launch an investigation into the unauthorized disclosure.<\/p>\n<p>No information on who leaked the draft has been made public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a grave betrayal of trust by somebody,\u201d Alito said. \u201cAnd it was a shock because nothing like that had happened in the past,\u201d adding that the leak changed the atmosphere of the court during the remainder of the term.<\/p>\n<p>Alito further noted that during the time between the leaked draft and the final decision, a California man allegedly threatened to kill Justice Brett Kavanaugh.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/man-pleads-not-guilty-trying-kill-justice-kavanaugh-rcna34874\">NBC News<\/a> reports authorities arrested Nicholas John Roske, of Simi Valley, California, in June near Justice Kavanaugh\u2019s home armed with a handgun, a knife, pepper spray, and burglary tools. Roske pleaded not guilty to the charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pending case, so I won\u2019t say anything more about that,\u201d Alito said.<\/p>\n<p>The threats against the nation\u2019s highest court have continued since the overturning.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/alito-says-leaked-abortion-opinion-made-conservative-justices-targets-rcna54033\">NBC<\/a>, authorities arrested a Georgia man last week after police found him driving in Washington with two handguns and a shotgun, planning to \u201cdeliver documents\u201d to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Alito switched gears after discussing the dangers he and other conservative Justices faced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that was last term,\u201d he said. \u201cNow where we\u2019re in a new term. I think that all of us . . . want things to get back to normal \u2014 the way they were before all of this last term . . . before COVID . . .
