and: \u201cWhat do we do with someone whose penis has been severed and wants it back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lane reports that the directors of Spain\u2019s Society of Psychiatry, Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Society of Endocrinology were interviewed by El Mundo, voicing their fears and objections to the Trans Law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congreso.es\/public_oficiales\/L14\/CONG\/BOCG\/A\/BOCG-14-A-113-1.PDF#page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">draft Trans Law<\/a> allows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jun\/29\/spain-bill-change-official-gender-without-medical-checks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a change of sex<\/a> in the registry from the age of 12 with judicial approval; from the age of 14 with parental support (but a judge can override parental refusal); and from the age of 16 independently,\u201d Lane reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe medical society directors all see a link between the bill for self-declared sex change and mistaken trans identity claims, neglect of underlying disorders, needless medicalisation and treatment regret,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The medical societies of Spain join the ranks of those in <a href=\"https:\/\/segm.org\/segm-summary-sweden-prioritizes-therapy-curbs-hormones-for-gender-dysphoric-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/genderreport.ca\/finland-strict-guidelines-for-treating-gender-dysphoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finland<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/englands-national-health-service-abandons-gender-affirming-model-of-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">England<\/a>, whose national health departments have all abandoned the \u201cgender affirming\u201d model of care after performing independent systematic reviews of the available evidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, the U.K.\u2019s National Health Service (NHS) proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engage.england.nhs.uk\/specialised-commissioning\/gender-dysphoria-services\/user_uploads\/b1937-ii-specialist-service-for-children-and-young-people-with-gender-dysphoria-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new guidelines<\/a> last week recognizing that children and adolescents identifying as transgender may be experiencing a \u201ctransient phase\u201d and warning that doctors should not encourage them to change their names and pronouns, as \u201csocial transition\u201d is not a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engage.england.nhs.uk\/specialised-commissioning\/gender-dysphoria-services\/user_uploads\/b1937-ii-interim-service-specification-for-specialist-gender-dysphoria-services-for-children-and-young-people-22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neutral act<\/a>\u201d and could have \u201csignificant effects\u201d in terms of \u201cpsychological functioning.\u201d Additionally, they have banned the use of puberty blockers in patients under 18, making exceptions only in certain cases for strict clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Celso Arango, head of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry department at one of Spain\u2019s leading public university hospitals, told El Mundo in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/papel\/2022\/10\/08\/634062b8e4d4d89c0c8b45b3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> earlier this month that the hospital at which he works has seen an explosion in young people identifying as transgender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a day-to-day basis at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hospital_General_Universitario_Gregorio_Mara%C3%B1%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gregorio Mara\u00f1\u00f3n Hospital<\/a> [in Madrid] we are assisting an explosion, a boom, an exponential increase in adolescents who say they are trans, and they are not,\u201d Arango said.<\/p>\n<p>Of the proposed new \u201cTrans Law\u201d, Arango was adamant it would bring a great deal of harm to youth mistakenly believing themselves to be transgender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is madness, it\u2019s going to hurt a lot of people, a lot of young people who have disorders think they\u2019re going to fix them by becoming trans \u2014 when they\u2019re not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to allowing minors to \u201cself-declare\u201d as transgender and access irreversible medical treatments, the law enacts a \u201cconversion therapy\u201d ban that would lead mental health professionals found guilty of its practice to face a maximum fine of \u20ac150,000.<\/p>\n<p>A parent-led group called AMANDA has also been formed to advocate for medical professionals to proceed with caution when dealing with trans-identifying children, and now represents approximately 300 parents across Spain. Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amandafamilias.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMANDA<\/a> protested in the Spanish capital with posters translating to \u201cLess Surgery, More Psychology\u201d and \u201cTrans Law = Danger For Our Children.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Huge success of our presentation at the Medical Academy yesterday, with over 400 people attending including over 200 of our families and the support of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Icomem_Oficial?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Icomem_Oficial<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CALDirector?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CALDirector<\/a> and most of the Feminist Movement.
