eroded Americans\u2019 wealth under President Biden\u2019s watch. But a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cei.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10000_Commandments_2022.pdf\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> highlights another huge \u201chidden tax\u201d the federal government is imposing on us through its reckless overreach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Competitive Enterprise Institute\u2019s Clyde Wayne Crews Jr. just released his latest annual study on our seemingly-endless federal regulations\u2014government rules and mandates\u2014that increase the cost of doing business. The expert estimates that, taken together, <\/span><b>the sweeping federal regulatory state now imposes a \u201chidden tax\u201d of $14,684 per US family.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe cost of government extends well beyond what Washington collects in taxes and the far greater amount it spends,\u201d Crews Jr. explains. \u201cFederal environmental, safety and health, social, and economic regulations and interventions affect the economy by hundreds of billions\u2014 even trillions\u2014of dollars annually.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnlike on-budget spending, <strong>regulatory costs are largely obscured from public view, constituting a hidden tax<\/strong>,\u201d he continues. \u201cJust as firms pass the costs of some taxes along to consumers, regulatory compliance costs and mandates borne by businesses will percolate throughout the economy, finding their way into consumer prices and workers\u2019 wages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The report contains some truly stunning facts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For one, a country whose economy was the size of just our regulatory costs would be the 8th-largest in the world! (Excluding the US). Similarly stunning is the fact that <\/span><b>the \u201chidden tax\u201d imposed on Americans by our regulatory state actually exceeds the typical income tax burden. <\/b><span>In fact, according to Crews Jr., \u201ca typical American household \u2018spends\u2019 more on embedded regulation than on health care, food, transportation, entertainment, apparel, services, or savings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is a bipartisan problem, with the feds imposing huge amounts in hidden regulatory costs on Americans in years past regardless of which party is in power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the report notes that President Trump did make promising deregulatory reforms in many sectors during his time in office\u2014which President Biden has since reversed.
