Gretchen Whitmer and Republican challenger Tudor Dixon dueled Tuesday night in the second and final debate before voters cast their ballots in less than two weeks. With the latest poll showing likely voters evening split between the candidates, two missteps by the incumbent may have handed Dixon the election.<\/p>\n<p> Whitmer Puts Sexually Explicit Books over Kids <\/p>\n<p>For weeks Whitmer avoided stating her position on whether sexually explicit books should be accessible in Michigan\u2019s taxpayer-funded public school libraries. As I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/25\/whitmer-should-be-drilled-on-sexualization-of-kids-during-tonights-michigan-gubernatorial-debate\/\">on Tuesday<\/a>, the moderators should push the governor to announce her view on the issue, and they did, asking Dixon first her position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019ve heard from parents from across the state,\u201d Dixon began, is that they are outraged about inappropriate sexual content in school libraries and they have risen up.\u00a0These are not textbooks helping children understand themselves, Dixon stressed, but are books \u201cdescribing to children how to have sex.\u201d And such books \u201cshould not be in our classrooms.\u201d \u201cI stand with those parents,\u201d Dixon continued, \u201cthat want to make sure we go back to the basics of reading, writing, and math in our schools.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response, Whitmer pretended the issue was about making \u201csure all children feel accepted and safe.\u201d She then portrayed Dixon\u2019s support of parents demanding sexually explicit books be removed from school libraries as \u201cwaging a fight\u201d for political purposes and \u201ctrying to wedge communities against one another.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dixon countered simply, \u201cWell, I guess we\u2019ve received the answer now: She is not going to stand with parents on this issue who are crying out across the state.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Whitmer\u2019s answer was predictable to those familiar with her far-left policies, with the Democrat governor now on the record on the issue, Dixon\u2019s team has a perfect closing argument for parents concerned by the sexualization of children in schools: Tudor stands with the moms and dads who want to return to the basics of reading, writing, and math, while Whitmer wants smut in schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And this issue resonates broadly, far beyond Tudor\u2019s conservative base, including the Democrat stronghold of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/25\/can-concerned-parents-turn-michigan-red-this-november-the-way-they-did-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dearborn<\/a>, the sixth most populous city in the state.<\/p>\n<p> Whitmer Lies About Proposition 3 <\/p>\n<p>Abortion proved another tripwire for Whitmer, but not because of her extreme position, which she continues to hide. Rather, Whitmer unwittingly made parental consent an issue by lying about Proposition 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Proposition 3, which is officially named the \u201cRight to Reproductive Freedom\u201d but is colloquially called the \u201cabortion amendment,\u201d will be on the ballot along with the governor\u2019s contest, leading the moderators to query the candidates about their views on the proposal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During Tuesday\u2019s debate, Whitmer told voters that \u201cProp 3 is absolutely necessary to preserve the rights we\u2019ve had for 49 years under <em>Roe v.
